As a riff on "The Book of Mormon", Steinberg acknowledges it as uniquely American literature and as a uniquely American religion. Steinberg shows us many echoes of the Hebrew Bible and its writer(s). He wisely hints that both the Book of Mormon and the Bible can sustain myriad interpretations. He suggests that both Mormon and Jewish text and practice can seem obscure and mysterious. Though Steinberg's book defies categorization, it is really a worthy read. We see before our eyes the thinking, the working and re working of quite complex religious and authorial ideas.. Steinberg would make a wonderful classroom teacher. He has the gift of gab with which he serves up a delicious dose of narrative and counter narrative. This is not a religious nor pious book. However, Steinberg's orthodox Jewish youth informs, shapes and structures his capacity to scrutinize, labor over and deliver an inside out view of another religious text.'ter's is in a category by itself

A very weird book--part introspective memoir, part effusive cynicism, part interpretation of history, literature, religion, and the place where they all come together, the Hill Cumorah. Steinberg, during a depressing period in his life, decides to go on a pilgrimage to the supposed sites where the supposed history related in the Book of Mormon supposedly occurred. Most readers will be very surprised to learn that most of those sites are in Mesoamerica, not the eastern or central United States, and that Mormon history can be and has been thoroughly conflated with Mayan history. Some of the description of his almost-picaresque journey is a tad too cutesy--how could he have chanced upon quite so many cartoonish weirdos on one trip? Why in the world, when he decided to infiltrate and actually act in a Mormon pageant (which seems very similar to the New Age one at Mount Shasta, sort of a passion play for angelophiles), would he use an alias that sounds just as Jewish as Avi Steinberg does? I recommend this book to people who like weird writing on weird topics. Like my Uncle Uzzy, who thinks Andrei Codrescu sits at the right hand of God.

A very satirical take on the Book of Mormon by a Jewish author, who decides to make the same journey Lehi and family took from Jerusalem to South America and then up to Palmyra, New York. Avi Steinberg was born in Jerusalem and returns to the city of his birth to discover the ancient Prophet Lehi. He goes to the old city where archeologists are uncovering the old city. Rather than look at old Christian and Jewish historical sites he tries to locate places mentioned in the Book or Mormon. He finds the placed some Mormons believe Nephi may have cut off Laban's head. He then travels to South America and joins a Book of Mormon tour of places that may have been historical Nephite cities. He has some deep incites on how some of Book of Mormon people lived and into why Moroni waited about 35 years after the destruction of the Nephites to hide up the plates. I found the book very enjoyable and his description of the hill Cumorah pageant as he signs up to participate in it and get assigned the part of Wicked Priest #2. It is funny, irreverent and thought provoking. If you can't laugh at your own religion every once in a while, you need to lighten up. I really enjoyed it and would recommend it.

The first half was interesting and then it got bogged down describing the Jos. Smith Farm and pageant. Should have gone to Nauvoo and Independence MO.

I thought that this might be your standard anti-Mormon book but was surprised to find a refreshing new reading of the book of Mormon. His writing style is witty and clever and I am looking forward to reading one of his other books.

What A.J. Jacobs did with the Bible, Avi Steinberg does with the Book of Mormon--he immerses himself into Mormon culture, going on a tour of Mormon sites in Central America and participating in a Mormon play near the Smith homestead. In a respectful, admiring way he displays appreciation for a book he does not believe in an LDS way, but more respect than the average non-LDS individual. He both explains his reservations with Mormonism and his appreciation for Joseph Smith. He occasionally gets both philosophical and psychological in his attempt to make sense of the book he considers a story inside of many of us. Having read his first book about his experience as a prison librarian (a great memoir), this one is very different. As a Congregational minister who has worked with and for Mormons as an Army chaplain, I found Avi's observations fascinating. I can't wait to find out what he's up to next.

I dont know why, but I couldn't get into this book. I didn't care for the author's writing style and I found it hard to follow. I only made it through 15 pages, then quit.

Between my son and myself, we had two different opinions of Avi Steinberg's "The Lost Book of Mormon." Maybe because I grew up with a few Mormons in the household (and he grew up with none), I was more sympathetic to Steinberg's case. I do feel like he wandered a little too much in his journey in making the case for The Book of Mormon as a work of literature, but it was nonetheless an enjoyable, sympathetic take on the book that is the basis for a huge religious structure.I liked it. The son didn't. So I'd recommend with that caveat. But I still gave it a 4-star because my opinion counted more.

A very well documented explanation of how slavery shapes southern politics. However I think a significant explanation for contemporary racism was excluded and not even mentioned. The war on drugs has continued to demonize African Americans for the last 50 years.The purpose of the 1971 “War on Drugs” was to marginalize blacks as revealed in the memoir by Nixon’s Chief of Staff, John Erlichman.“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies the anti-war left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black – but getting the public to associate hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities, we could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about drugs, of course we did.”Shifting the responsibility of drug abuse from criminal justice to public health would alleviate racial inequality and a host of other social problems. This premise in no way justifies drug use but this problem could be better addressed by public health. The criminal justice approach has exacerbated the animosity between law enforcement and minority populations. Enforcing drug laws justifies law enforcement’s excessive traffic stops and arbitrary hassling of minorities in their neighborhoods. The primarily minority prison population has increased from 300,000 in 1970 to 2,200,000 in 2010.As was demonstrated in the 1920’s, prohibition not only failed to decrease alcohol use but created an underground economy supported by the mafia. The prohibition of drugs has not decreased drug use, but strengthened gangs, increased crime and consequently the prison population. Most crime is conducted between gangs involved with territorial drug sales.The $40 billion spent by federal/state governments for drug related arrests and incarceration, not to mention the estimated $70 billion tax revenue from drug sales could be shifted to addressing education, poverty and mental health. Drug addiction and related health problems are better addressed by public health than incarceration.

This is an incredible study by the authors and they deserve kudos. The authors write about and explain the persistence of conservative racism in the South. They explain the persistence of racism by use of behavioral path dependence to explain why southern whites harbor higher levels of racial resentment than other parts of the country. They show that the strong levels of racial resentment are connected to the slave holding history of the South. Using post-Civil War history, they show that not only individual beliefs regarding racism shaped this resentment but the adoption by government institutions of segregation reinforced the racial resentment of southerners. This is a book everyone should read. It addresses the issue that taints all of our politics and helps explain why we cannot get out political and cultural houses in order till we all admit racism is alive and well.

A Sick Day for Amos McGee thrust its way into my heart in January 2011 when it won the Caldecott Medal. I had run a mock Caldecott unit with my third grade class, and this book wasn’t even on our radar enough to put on our ballots. I had some definite favorites that year, both for the Caldecott Medal and for timeless books I wanted to make sure I bought for my own children (Art & Max; City Dog, Country Frog; Ballet For Martha; Mirror Mirror; It’s a Book; Ubiquitous), and I was initially crushed when some of those favorites weren’t recognized at the ALA awards… Until I went to the bookstore that afternoon, bought A Sick Day for Amos McGee, and realized how amazing it was.

Though Philip Stead had published one book previously, A Sick Day for Amos McGee was his wife Erin’s first illustrated book… and both newbies hit the nail squarely on the head with this charming, timeless book. Amos McGee, zookeeper who will remind adults of Mr. Rogers, is one of the more endearing book characters I can think of. He wakes early each morning, greets even the items around his house and the bus driver, and is extraordinarily devoted to the animals at his zoo. He knows each one intimately, taking care to make them feel comfortable and loved. Until, one day… Amos McGee gets sick. Amos’s tenderness with his animal friends is reflected in the worry they feel about him and the actions they take to ensure that he too feels comfortable and loved. This is the kind of story that makes children and adults alike want to treat their friends and loved ones the same way Amos McGee does.And the illustrations! Erin’s pencil and woodblock prints are done with minimal, reserved color, but are full of details that render each reading of those story new and exciting. I didn’t notice the repeated inclusion of a red balloon, tiny bird, and mouse until the fourth or fifth time that I read the book! Tiny details aside, Erin’s sketches allow the sweet, caring personalities of each character to show through. Readers feel genuinely concerned about the rhino with a runny nose, depicted with constant concern or worry on his face reflecting just how sick he feels, and compassionate toward the shy penguin, drawn with his wings and toes pointed in, as if he’s trying to curl up small enough to go unnoticed.Philip and Erin Stead, thank you for this book. A story of the kindest of friends, timeless illustrations leaving you with more with every reading… It was an instant favorite with my room full of third graders, and it is now a favorite with my own children (2 and 4.5). This is truly one of the most beautifully written children's books and I highly and fully recommend it. My two-year old grandson loves this book and there is such a loveliness and a gentleness to it that makes it appealing for adults as well. Amos tends to the animals every single day, following the same routine, day after day, until one day, he does not show up for work because he is not feeling well. The animals take the same bus Amos takes to get to the zoo and they show up at Amos's house because they miss him.The illustrations reinforce the gentleness and loving nature of the story. This is a book that is meant to be kept on a book shelf for children of all ages - and maybe for adults of all ages as well.Please do not hesitate to add this beautiful book to any child's collection.

I just adore this book. It's really a book about friendship, thoughtfulness, and caring. Amos McGee is the zookeeper who is very punctual and spends time with the animals. Amos finds things to do with his animal friends that make them feel good about themselves. One day, Amos gets sick and his animal friends come to his house to care for him while he's ill. They show him the same consideration and affection that he has shown to them.

This book is adorable! The illustrations are nicely done - not too much color that will overstimulate a child. The story is very sweet. My daughter likes looking for the red balloon on each page. It teaches children about kindness, caring and selflessness.

I found this book in a list of Best Books for Toddlers and checked it out at the library. It has become all of our favorite, and I just purchased a copy of the book for our own collection. It is also the first time my 2 1/2 year old daughter has said someone's first and last name so I thought that was really cute. The book illustrations and story are sweet and beautiful and this really makes it in our top favorite books (and we read a lot of children books). The artwork is truly brilliant and kids will love searching for "easter eggs" on each page, including a red balloon and small mouse and bird that follow the animals and Amos through their adventures.A beautiful, fun and heartwarming book. You and your kids will both love it and read it at bedtime for years :)
