Loved this book. I so enjoyed going back to the small town of, Blue Hollow Falls. Seth has bought a run down vineyard that he is hoping to get up and running. He leads a solitary life, but when his sister volunteers his home for a swap with a friend. Pippa, a Irish folk singer shows up on his doorstep, things will soon change and their lives will not be the same. They soon realize that they both need each other to heal from the past. With the descriptive writing you will feel like you are in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I so want to visit. Love this little town, such a sense of community. Loved the small build of romance between Pippa and Seth. I highly recommend this for your summer reading.

OMG. SO SO MUCH LOVE. This book was such a joy. I've loved all of Donna Kauffman's books, but with this series she's really leveled up. So bravo. My only complaint is her publisher is listing the next book as "Now Available" when it's only on preorder (until October) and that's just mean because I want more! Like...now.

Copied from Goodreads:This is the best one in the series. I read it out of sequence since I had at first purchased it in Kindle which is not my preferred format--once I had it in paperback though... Like all of the other books in this series it is beautifully written, clearly evokes the people and culture of this wonderful world MS Kauffman has crafted and takes the time to make secondary (only in the amount of time and focus of the story) characters three dimensional and important factors in advancing the story line. The one thing that sets this above the other two novels is the pacing Still slow paced in keeping with the culture and purposeful nature of the protagonists, the events (Mabry's accident, Jake and Will's interactions) in the story help advance the plot. Everyone will love Pippa and Seth's story and all the maneuvering of the residents in getting them together. I love the fact that the final solution to their problems is made in an off-hand comment. I also really appreciate the fact that the characters--no matter what--still keep a sense of humor.

Interesting backdrop for this series. Beautiful descriptions of the locale, and the diverse group of artisans inhabiting it. The love stories are a bit predictable, but the characters, their careers and backgrounds are also somewhat interesting. My biggest pet peeve is the author’s use of the word ‘dryly’. Almost every few pages of character conversation, someone comments ‘dryly’. I can’t help but look for it and cringe when it predictably appears. Her editor should really have caught this, or someone should have done a word usage test to find this glaring repetition. And I apologize to anyone who reads this review and now find themselves annoyed at that word, mea culpa!

I have been a fan of Donna Kauffman's books for a long time, some more than others. This series is exceptional, and this book is definitely my favorite, so far. The characters are real, caring, interesting people, ones you would like to count among your friends. Not perfect of course, but real. Just enough heat to satisfy without that being the main story line. I guess that is one of the reasons I liked it so much, there is a story! Not just characters seeing how soon they could get to the sex part. I can't wait for the next in the series!

Donna Kauffman never ceases to deliver! In this case its a heartwarming story with a great audio version to complement it. DK offers a story that is multidimensional that touches not only your heart, but engages your mind. The characters are well rounded, interesting, and charming, yet there is a depth that invites you to learn more about them. The supporting characters and the town have a depth and enchantment of their own that engages the reader and carries them along for an interesting and enjoyable ride.

Seth has been a strong secondary character in this series and now its his turn! Pippa needs a place of seclusion where she can heal physically and emotionally from a major operation. Seths sister wants to experience Ireland first hand. When her former college roommate suggests that Moira nd Pippa exchange homes , Moira offers up Seths home to Pippa. That's where the fun begins and an attraction that both Seth and Pippa try to avoid. I am thrilled with this story and cannot wait for the next ones to hit the market!!

Who wouldn't want to live in Blue Hollow Falls? This third visit, with old friends and new, further develops the sense of community and really makes me want to head southwest for a visit. The characters are warm and caring. This time out we get to know Seth, a new vintner (along with his llama, Dex) and Pippa, a famous Irish folksinger, who is recovering from a throat injury. So many stories intertwine, and lead to a most satisfying, almost fairytale ending.

As a non-novice and a non-expert Vim user, the book was an easy and brisk read. In the first half or so chapters of the book, I learned some "new" aspects of Vim, e.g., :vimgrep, :args, while brushing over the features that I already use in Vim. The later chapters were more about configuration and specific scenarios; something to visit when the need arises.For a novice, the book can seem a bit fast paced. However, if they try out the recommendations as they read thru the book, then it should be fine.Overall, I think the book is well-suited to hone Vim skills (and not to get started with Vim).

Hello World! I bought this book because I love console stuff and vim which is one of the best tools ever made (before this book I used it as editor for little programs and in /etc/ directory :) ). I read practical C programming made by this author and I was delighted with it, so I gave a shot and bought another his book. Book itself is written in simply ,clear, nice English [but not primitive one !](I'm not native English speaker so it's quite important for me ;) ), things are as simple as it's possible. Book itself is full of tricks and tips, it's nice but sometimes you might feel a little bit overwhelmed with all this commands, keymapping and so on. Programmers will definitely find useful scripts and tips. Right now I cannot image programming without vim, if you are afraid that in world of IDE vim is worthless you are totally wrong, you can still use vim like keymapps and command with plugins (eg. varpper for eclipse), and it's much much more powerful than standard editor! To sum up I think that every non-expert vim user should read at least one of this kind of book.

There are a lot of neat tips and helpful examples in the book. For example, I didn't know you could edit a .tar.gz file directly. The author also walks you through how to clean up a ragged text file or reformat a text file so you can pass it off to a word processor.There are more than a few typos and grammatical errors (your vs. you're, space needed after some punctuation, Jack Benny definition typo), but nothing that prevented the meaning from coming across.Worth the price.

Nice book, but too many typos and errors. A thorough proofreading is definitely desirable!

Considering the cost , this is an ok book. I can't say I was blown away by the content, but I did learn a thing or two. Would recommend doing the vimtutor first and then finding other books.

Typical text: "But this only works is the cursor starts on at the beginning of the paragraph."Seriously, there wasn't an effort to make a pass through the text and fix these obvious problems?

Great book as an introduction to advanced binary analysis techniques: binary instrumentation, dynamic taint analysis, and symbolic execution. Includes overview of the ELF/PE formats and a x86 assembly crash course. This book is great accompaniment for the popular Practical Malware Analysis. Readers should already be familiar with C/C++, x86 assembly and basic reverse engineering.

I have only gone half way through, but what I liked most was that it jumps right into details. Its very organized content wise and easy to follow along with the examples. There's a vm you can download to follow along which is a huge help.

Covers all major binary analysis topics, from basic to advanced, withclear illustrations and examples for each topic. Includes overview ofthe ELF and PE binary formats and an x86 crash course to help thebeginning binary analyst get up to speed.

Great book so far (I haven’t finished reading it yet). But this is the third book I have gotten and its always been the same issue: the cover comes off. The binding is at fault.Amazon has exchanged / refunded me so many times for these incidents. Although the book contents are great, the overall experience is not.

Can't go wrong with No Starch Press. This is a great book on analyzing ELF binaries. Doesn't cover Windows PE binaries very much but well worth the read.

From the perspective of a consumer, it demonstrates how, if the appropriate processed data are provided (unfortunately still not widespread), one can visually inspect the data to gain insight into subjective quality. For more information about this approach than I could ever provide here, check out the online video by Dr. Toole titled, "Floyd Toole - Sound reproduction – art and science/opinions and facts". This video will give you a very good idea of what the book is about - at least in part.Contrary to critics who claim that Dr. Toole is just repeating the Harman party line, he developed these measurement techniques while working at the National Research Council of Canada (NRCC) and brought them to Harman with him. They were originally published in a 1986 AES Journal article titled, "Loudspeaker Measurements and Their Relationship to Listener Preferences: Part 2" while he was still working at the NRCC. These calculations can accurately predict a so-called "room curve" from a collection of the loudspeaker's anechoic measurements. He shows that a loudspeaker having a flat on-axis anechoic response will have a room curve that tilts downward with increasing frequency. A "room curve" in this context is a measurement of the loudspeaker's steady-state frequency response using typical measurement software, smoothed to eliminate the "hash" that shows up in the unsmoothed measurement. This is why equalizing a system to a flat room curve results in a subjectively bright sound. It's somewhat disheartening how little this is understood. People who have made this mistake could lose confidence in the efficacy of audio measurements in general.The above techniques break down when dealing with in-room bass response. In the modal frequency region of a room, the room itself dominates the system frequency response, so for optimum bass performance, room modes and their interaction with the loudspeakers and/or subwoofer(s) must be taken into account. Chapter 8 contains a very good discussion of room modes, and how equalization, the placement of listening position, and the placement of one or more subwoofers interacts with the room modes to affect what is measured and heard. He refers to the latter technique as "mode manipulation". With multiple subs and a given set of sub positions, the possibility exists for reducing the seat-to-seat variation of the frequency response in the modal region. This technique requires individual equalization of each sub, combined with optimization software. Harman calls their implementation "Sound Field Management" (SFM). Unfortunately, it is only available on JBL Synthesis custom installation products. DIY alternatives to Sound Field Management exist, however.I've already gone on way too long, yet I've only scratched the surface of what's covered in the book. If you have the previous edition and liked it, getting the third edition is a no-brainer, as there's plenty of new material and the organization of the book is much improved. Those who are committed to a rational approach to achieving good sound and willing to put forth the necessary effort to enhance their understanding of how to do it will benefit the most from the book.

Essential reading for any serious home audio/home theater enthusiast. This edition greatly re-organizes the first edition (the 'second edition' was simply a reprint of the first edition, under an new publisher) and adds much new material. And btw, the complaints here that it is 'repetitive' are misplaced. As Toole notes in the book, he intentionally repeats information because he expects some readers will skip chapters, in order to go directly to the chapter(s) pertinent to them. It's a feature, not a bug, and a good one.

At some point I'll write up a review, but since Amazon only allows questions for products other than books I'm putting it here. Plus I can't find any straightforward way of reaching Dr. Toole.Dr. Toole, thank you for the really important work you've done. I was puzzled after buying the new edition why Figure 22.3 (see photo) was omitted from the new version. Especially after reading about your response to the internet trolls mischaracterizing your position on first reflections. Was there a reason why you omitted the figure? Anyone else that thinks they might know why please feel free to pipe in.

I found the book to be enlightening concerning the marketing hype that is prevalent in the industry. The author is very well respected in the field of acoustics. He delves in to what is important in evaluation in audio systems. The book changed many of my goals in audio system design.

This book was a great resource. It's sectioned in such a way that it's easy to look up specific topics quickly for reference. It covers basic and advanced acoustics and makes it's claims based on scientific method.

Toole's latest book is another great reference for audiophiles, sound engineers, and anyone wanting a look at what makes great (and bad) sound. The expanded sections go well beyond the first edition and there is lots of new material.

This is my 3rd Gaiman: I've finished "American Gods" and "Norse Mythology". And I would have the same review of his work for each so far.Gaiman is an extraordinary, a gifted wordsmith. His sentences are beautiful - really, read them aloud. He is a master of tone and of place. He is an efficient writer, and there are not many of them around, at least in F&SF. But...But he is a poor story teller. His fascinating characters shuffle around, and they learn a technique or two, and they experience, and they try to learn some more. But they never have significant interactions that create conflict and resolution, and thus a sense of satisfaction at the end of his tales. And they NEED that because everything about his work is mythic, fundamental, playful in the depths of us all. There are lessons you have to teach us, Gaiman, and there are lessons we have to learn from you. You must not remain aloof from the drama of humanness, buddy.And so here, in "The Graveyard Book," we have the sudden realization from Gaiman somewhere around the two-thirds mark that, maybe, he'd better get moving and try to find some ending so he can call it a day and have a beer. He has to bring back a character from early on just for the occasion. Evil grows a little gray hair and masquerades as a lover of roasted potatoes (which, I suppose, is the kind of thing we might fear most about true evil - its true banality; except in a mythic construction, darn it!)And so the reader is, ultimately, left slack-jawed. What just happened? A bad guy broke his ankle? That is Justice, capital J? Don't set us up for sequels ("Um. Silas. If you're ever in trouble, call me. I'll come and help.") if you haven't fully established heroic perseverance from the gitgo.So, yes, read this book because Gaiman writes as one should write. He just hasn't discovered how to create - yet.... And when he does, it will be, well, very special.

This is the story of Nobody Owens and his guardians and friends in a graveyard. They became his protectors and family when he was a toddler and a Man Jack did away with his family, shortly before coming after him to do the same. He grows up among the long-dead people and other supernatural beings. He is protected from the world, but soon his past and his future beckon him into the world of the living. His interactions with beings from both worlds are witty, humorous, moving, and at times nerve-wracking or dangerous. Yet always, these qualities underscore deeper truths about the human. And not-so-human, condition. This is one of Neil Gaiman's finest works for grade-school level kids and up (including adults). He remains one of my favorite tellers of Other Worldly tales. Highly recommended.

LOVED IT! LOVED IT! LOVED IT! This story left me wanting more when it was over. The Graveyard Book is by far my favorite novel from Neil Gaiman. The story revolves around a little boy named Nobody Owens, and the peculiar circumstances that led his life down the even more peculiar path that he now travels. If you read only one of Neil Gaiman's novels in your lifetime, might I suggest that The Graveyard Book be the one you choose?

I was amazed at how dark this book was, considering it's written for children. But it has the hypnotic tug you find in dreams and the story logic has the oddness and inevitability of old children's fables and fairy tales. Hard to imagine someone not enjoying this book, whether an adult or middle-grade reader (or listener). I bought the audible version, which I highly recommend. It is read by the author and it turns out Neil Gaiman could have had a second career as a voice actor. I loved his unique characterizations and accents, and I enjoyed hearing it read in the author's own voice (although this often doesn't work out well). In short, I loved it, recommend it, and will probably buy the print version to go with the audio.

In high school, we read "A Separate Peace". Lo, these many years later, it called to me to re-read it. The characters are so beautifully fleshed out. The storyline is perfection. The words flow like the water in the Colorado River. It truly is a novel worth reading and re-reading. It has haunted me these many years because it is profound in message.

Finny and Gene are roommates and best friends, yet sports come more easily to Finny than academics come to Gene. The jealously that arises out of that comparison results in an impulsive action that ends in tragedy.The book is sometimes interpreted through the lens of repressed homosexuality, though John Knowles in a 1987 interview denied that as his intention. Indeed, the story is stronger when we resist that anachronistic reading. Instead, to the extent that A Separate Peace still speaks to us nearly 60 years later, it is only when read at face value, a tale about rivalry, jealously, and the mixture of nobility and evil that lurks in the human heart. Gene comes back 15 years later to try to come to terms with the enormity of his betrayal, to try to forgive himself. How many of us have stood before our own trees, longing to forgive ourselves for hurts impulsively perpetrated in the past? Knowles holds up a mirror to our own visage, and in so doing, guarantees that a lesson from an otherwise obscure setting and a forgotten time will endure.

Long before the term 'bromance' gained its cachet, long before Middle School depictions of 'mean girls' and female rivalries, Fowles' Separate Peace concerns the relationship between two boys in a privileged prep school before the beginning of WWII, when all would be changed forever. The two roommates are opposites to one another and the best of friends, until a series of tragic events changes each of them. It is a rare book that addresses how two young boys can become both rivals and intimate friends, all the while being educated into a competitive world where men learn to become wary of each other.

I had never heard of this novel until The Great American Read listed it as one of the top 100 best loved books. The subject matter intrigued me; however, I was disappointed. Finney, the great all American athlete/student fell from tree. Did Gene, his intellectual best friend cause the accident? Neither are sure, and the book doesn't go anywhere. Both are students in a private upscale eastern school and facing the war in Europe following their graduation. There are many 'forks in the road' the book can follow, but no. John Knowles writes well; however, I was disappointed. A friendship that could end with accusations, or feelings of guilt, dissolves! End of story.

It opens in 1959 as Gene comes to visit Devon School and reminisces at the tree where he and Phineas started The Suicide Society of The Summer Session.The story immediately flashbacks to the summer of 1942. Phineas (Finny) and Gene are roommates and best friends. Finny is a handsome, taunting, daredevil athlete. Gene is a lonely, introverted intellectual. Because opposites attract they form a very strong bond. Finny comes up with the idea of jumping from a huge tree in the school property into the river. Even though they were surrounded by classmates, only Finny and Gene jump, thus sealing their friendship with The Suicide Society of The Summer Session.As they return to their senior year, Genes resents Finny's adventures and sees them as a threat to his academic excellence. When Elwin (Leper) Lepellier decides to join their club, Gene was studying for a test. Forced to go and jump with their new member, Gene decides to make Finny fall off the tree by jouncing the limb Finny was using to jump. Finny falls and breaks up his leg; all of his athletic abilities are curtailed.Gene tries to confess to Finny, but it is to no avail. Finny is in denial and more determined to be Gene's closest friend. Finny trains Gene to be an athlete in the fictitious 1944 Olympics and Gene helps Finny with his studies.But Leper had witnesses Gene's act of treason toward Finny and he decides to join the army. Unfortunately, Leper can't take it and cracks up. He's discharged under the Section Eight army rules.When Leper returns to Devon, his classmates decide to hold at trial against Gene. This time Finny is really hurt. As he runs out of the assembly, he breaks his leg again.When the school doctor tries to set the leg, Finny just dies.Written in 1959, this books is not only a war novel, but also a classic coming of age piece. Using the metaphor of the friendship between two boys, we see how war can damage human beings. Just like training camp ruined Leper, envy and rancor ruins the friendship between Gene and Phineas. "...whenever you really love something, then it loves you back, in whatever way it has to love." (Gene p. 111)"An operating room is a place where the risks are just more formal than in other places. An operating room and a war." (Dr. Stanpole p. 193)"Why did it have to happen to you boys so soon, here at Devon?" (Dr. Stanpole p. 194)Gene does enlists in the Navy, but: "I never killed anybody and I never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Because my war ended before i was ever put on an uniform; I was on active duty all my time at school; I killed my enemy there." (p. 204)"Your war memories will be with you forever, you'll be asked about them a thousand times after the war is over." (Mr. Healy p. 199) Nicely said!

A Separate Peace belongs to that small group of books that I first read as an adolescent/teenager, that made a deep impact on me, and which have remained favorites that I re-read every few years. I discovered this book totally on my own -- it was never required reading in any of my school classes - and so thankfully I never noticed a Cain/Abel parallel or any homoerotic themes. In fact, I never knew of such assertioins of this book until reading some of the reviews here. Such themes would have completely spoiled the book for me. Instead, I read it -- and still read it - as simply a story about a young man struggling with the love/hate, loyalty/jealousy facets of his relationship with his best friend.Although A Separate Peace is anything but simple. It is a short but scintillating book, flawlessly written. Every word is perfectly placed, nothing superfluous. Every time I read it (or hear it, as nowadays I listen to an audio version) I am amazed anew at Knowles' ability to craft such a powerful story. I become Gene, and I squirm as my ugliest human traits are revealed. Listening to (or reading) A Separate Peace is like having a scab brutally ripped off, revealing the bloody wound beneath.This is a truly unforgettable story that has a power few books achieve.

I ordered this to use state songs for a piano recital. I had to simplify several, but was pleased to find these songs.

This book did not have as much umph As the State Songs: Anthems and Their Origins, but I did use it to compare arrangements.

Very pleased with the condition of the book, it had been in a library. It was all that I needed for my performance.Prompt mailing and would recommend.

Book is great, but I gave it to a friend and now I need another for me.

This songbook has the best 'Star-Spangles Banner' arrangement ever! That was the main reason I got it, although I enjoy playing the state songs (esp. Colorado's:)) as well!

This book, "State Songs of America" is perfect for creating programs for schools, organizations, and all other gatherings of people. I am using this for several programs. One being a program given for ladies of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. It will be "Name That State" after playing the song of the original eleven seceded states. What Fun...
