I really love this style of painting and found the book inspirational. Unfortunately, Ms. Engle's technique requires a lot of removing paint by erasing, scraping, sanding or whatever, but she doesn't describe these steps in enough detail to follow her process. A video would be more helpful than this book, and I discovered she has several but they are pricey. The first part of the book where she explores the philosophy of creating art helped to focus my mission statement (for lack of a better word). The wash techniques are exciting and produce wonderful, somewhat uncontrolled results. They also use a lot of paint and water and require paper that can handle it. And experimentation.Also, despite the title, the "painting itself" part is only the first step. Once the initial washes are on, the author spends considerable time removing paint and adding details. Chances are, to get similar results, similar effort and extensive experience must also be applied.I'd recommend this book for the concepts presented, but with the caveat that it isn't exactly the detailed instruction in the technique that I'd hoped for.

Another of my favorite award-winning wc artists. Ever since I saw her work published in a leading wc art magazine many years ago. She presents an unusual starting technique, including colors applied from squirt bottles -- where you wonder whether anything beautiful can come from such chaos, but it does. Her landscapes are readily recognizable but still have a dreamy quality about them, difficult for the artist to effectively pull off, but she does. The different techniques she uses to preserve white spaces is alone worth the price of the book -- together with other unconventional "tools" such as the use of sand and gravel, pine needles and grass, powdered pigments, soap bubbles, heat gun, and similar. As far as some review comments that it is not detailed enough re: steps used to get from start to finish. I have found that virtually any art book on a gallery quality painting comes up short there -- and only attending a workshop or somehow watching an artist from start to finish can supply that insight. But Nita's book gives enough clues to an artist with some experience to allow the trying of several of her techniques successfully. No one, including her, gets it right always -- see her revealing comment on pg 110 "Redesigning a Finished Painting" -- even the masters many times painted their final masterpieces over a previous failed painting. Note too her comments on correcting a composition failing in her painting Island Lake II, pg 105: " ... made a very detailed tracing of the design... After erasing the chalk, I removed some of the paint from the necessary areas with a toothbrush, razor blade, and sandpaper, then washed in the new colors and repainted some darks while the wash was still wet." Corrections, another useful technique Nita discusses. So, for me this book at least is a highly recommended text for the wc artist, no matter what style one paints, and no matter the experience level, provided one can deal with some frustration to gain mastery of a new technique.

Every single word on every page of this book is valuable to the thoughtful watercolorist... SO many techniques, so carefully explained.The "doing" of watercolor often defies words, but where they are "captureable", Nita Engle has captured them and shared them as a treasure-trove of ideas and options for ANY watercolorist.Sadly, the title doesn't do this work justice- even the subtitle would have been more striking- but push past that and read this book. It will change how you think about and create your art.

I've actually bought this book before but I pass it around. one of the best reference book for anyone who is interested in pushing the boundaries of what watercolor can do. I teach and the instruction in this book is invaluable.

Love her paintings. It is a completely new way to approach watercolor and somehow it is not that easy, at least for me. I would like it better if some the paintings showing in the book, would it have more detail in color mixture, what techniques where use in specific part of the paintings. Overall, she does a great deal explaining how to work out the different techniques, the material to use and the palette she uses.The book is worthy to have it, for those who like to experience new things.

This is an excellent watercolor instructional book by Nita. She explains her approach to watercolor painting in a dynamic and loose manner. Her illustrations and explanations are encouraging. I wish she had a video instruction and demonstration series I could purchase. Very talented!

Though interesting reading the concepts presented here are for much more advanced painters. The book is worth it just to see the creations the artist presents as examples.

This will give you solid advice on how to organize your campaign timeline, canvass door to door, organize your volunteers, hold events, and figure out your priority districts from the historical voting results. However, it contains nothing about the new world of the internet. Not the book or author's fault - it's just an old book - but there is nothing on websites, email campaigns, or social media campaigns. Still, what is contained in this book is really valuable information. Even if you find a more updated book about running election campaigns using social media, I'd still recommend this book for all the other items I listed.

Excellent resource for people with no experience running for even the most minor office.

What an excellent book! I am running a local campaign for a family member and have bought three different books from Amazon. While all three have great ideas and offer substance, I would take this one hands down if I could only have one.The specific information on precinct and voter analysis are well worth the price of the book alone.

Having worked on more campaigns than I can remember, there is no better, more useful, comprehensive and effective beginners guide to running a political campaign than this. This is the one that you will use and remember.

I absolutely love this book. When I first bought the book I had a lot of questions about campaign management. There were a lot of things my friends who were experienced in senior campaign management told me that this book confirms. I was worried that the book would be centered around a really small race, such as a mayoral race of a small city. Although, smaller races like city, county and state senate, representative races are mentioned a lot, there are a few mentions of larger statewide/federal races mentioned in the book.The one thing that I do not like about the book is is the organization of it's chapters and subchapters. That relatively minor, however.If the author could write about, in her next edition, more day to day duties as it relates to staff, this book would be the best out there! Everyone said that the job of the campaign manager is VERY time consuming and often you're helping others like press secretary, field director and others do their job, which makes sense. However, this book doesn't really give you a sense of the time commitment that it takes to be a campaign manager. Finally, I'd recommend adding subchapters for more positions for the larger statewide campaigns and an in-depth analysis of their job, seeing that the campaign manager should be very well aware of their duties in case he/she has to step in and help aid in their job.

I did a search in my confusion about how to help with my son's campaign and stumbled on this book at Amazon. It came quickly enough to be timely for me and was a real help to my planning. It is clear, easy to read and understand. I was lucky to fine it!

He was the first individual to co-organize the first international workshop on NO and Cancer with Dr. Jean-François Jeannin in Paris. Subsequently, they co-organized three additional conferences on the same topic. The last fourth workshop was held in March in Sevilla, Spain with Dr. Muntane, and the proceedings were published in Redox Biology recently. Ironically, it was very near the spot where the Japanese commander of the Red Team during the shipboard War Games at Hashirajima had put them, and where (the games' chief judge) Rear Admiral Ugaki Matome had insisted they could never be." - from THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY"In hindsight, it is evident that the course of the war - and with it the course of history - had tilted on the fulcrum of the Battle of Midway." - from THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY"Were we better than the Japanese, or just luckier?" - Admiral Chester Nimitz (Henry Fonda), at the conclusion of the 1976 film MidwayIn some ways, the book's title THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY by Craig Symonds is a little misleading as the Pacific Ocean carrier battle of June 1942 under examination doesn't seriously begin until page 218, well more than halfway through the volume's narrative text. But make no mistake, it's the backstory occupying the first couple hundred pages that makes the whole a superlative work of military history. Now I feel I have as complete an understanding of the battle and what led up to it as a casual student of World War II could hope to have.The book (necessarily) begins with the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor by the Kido Butai, the Japanese Navy's mobile carrier force commanded by Admiral Yamamoto, i.e. the effect this attack had on the fighting assets subsequently available to the U.S. Navy. Moving on in examining the next six months leading to the Midway confrontation, Symonds considers the nature and strategic bent of the two opposing navies, their commanders, their ships and planes, the men that flew the latter, and the preliminary skirmishes (if they can be called such): the American carrier raids on the Marshalls and Gilberts islands in February 1942 and the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942.Once the main act gets underway and evolves to a conclusion that was remarkably different than what the Japanese planners had envisioned, the reader can perhaps not but be struck by the apparent triviality of circumstances which were key to the outcome of the battle, e.g. the delayed take-off of a Japanese scout plane and the wake generated by a Japanese destroyer as it proceeded at flank speed to catch up with its task force; that old saw about the loss of a horseshoe nail to the survival of a kingdom comes to mind.The maneuvers of opposing armies across a landscape relative to rivers, towns, hills, or enemy entrenchments are simple to describe and map compared to ship and plane movements across a featureless ocean. One of the strengths of the BATTLE OF MIDWAY narrative is the author's skill at doing just that. At no time was I confused. The thirteen included maps are clearly rendered and invaluable.There were two other aspects of the chronicle that stood out for me, though I doubt that effect was intended by Symonds. One was the complete ineptitude of the commander of the U.S.S. Hornet's air group; one wonders how he continued up the promotion ladder to vice-admiral as his career progressed. Really? The second was the casual and appalling brutality inflicted on a few downed American pilots fished out of the sea by the Japanese, e.g. in one instance, two airmen, after being interrogated by their captors, had weights tied to their legs and they were tossed back into the ocean.Was the outcome of the Battle of Midway based on better luck or abilities? For me, it came down to the former. But good luck is a part of life (or not), and if it gets me home safe at the end of the day, I'll take it.THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY is a must-read for anyone interested in the Pacific War of World War II.

Symonds did his homework, turning history over with the spade of research and revealing a treasure trove of priceless information in the background leading up to this catastrophe for the Imperial Japanese Navy.One has to really wonder about Yamamoto after reading this book. To me, he shares as much blame as Nagumo, after reading this expertly written and cited book.Notwithstanding the fact that we had their code, we attacked with suicidal fanaticism. Spruance was mortified he had only three remaining torpedo bombers left at the end.Others things, too - I had thought the Japanese had at least SOME type of radar - wrong answer!Such a good book - I only wish it could continue forever.

This account of the turning point battle of WW 2 in the Pacific offers a good overview of the battle, including the factors that led to its occurrence. It provides a good account of both sides, a major component of any good military history. The narrative offers an interesting study of the major commanders, their fleets and the circumstances leading to the encounter. As far as I can tell, its timeline of events is accurate, a major factor considering that the battle was fought across the International Date Line. This fact has often led to confusion in other accounts of the action. It also explores one of the major questions that arose from the battle, I.e. why the USS Hornet's strike against the Japanese carrier strike force was sent on an incorrect heading. Only its torpedo squadron was able to find it and only because its leader broke away from the fighters and dive bombers on his own initiative and found the Japanese carriers. This book is a worthy companion to "Miracle at Midway." Anyone interested in the Pacific War will find both these books informative and engrossing.

This is the American version of the most important battle of the pacific war against Japan. It is a well told story that will make one cringe at the almost criminal negligence of sending young men to die in torpedo planes not fit for the service in which they were employed and dropping faulty torpedoes that did no damage to the Japanese. There were hardly any survivors of the torpedo squadrons sent out. Thank heavens for the dive bombers that sank the four Japanese carriers that won the battle for the Americans.This book should be read first and then Shattered Sword, the Japanese account of the battle.

I have had the pleasure of visiting Taxco Mexico a few times and Spratling silver is well known in the town. I knew almost nothing about him until I purchased this book on Amazon. It covers his life with particular detail focused on his years in New Orleans (and William Faulkner), and his time in Taxco Mexico. Like the other reviewer said, it is a detailed book and can occasionally be a bit dry but I'm glad I read it. If you make it down to Taxco and it's 300 silver shops you can have a nice lunch in the actual house Spratling got started in. Now I have a better idea why he is so revered there.

A great book but very "dense." This book gives lots of detail and is great for someone who wants ALL the background.
