The Channel Tunnel (Great Building Feats), by Sandra Donovan

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-Donovan traces the history of the Channel Tunnel from Napoleonic times to the present through accessible text, color and black-and-white photos and reproductions, and a time line of the actual construction. The diagrams and pictures are particularly helpful in explaining the construction process. Throughout the book, the author is careful to present the sides of the French and British without bias. Each chapter progresses chronologically, beginning with a brief history of the English Channel, and ending with the successes and issues that the Chunnel faces today. This is an excellent resource for science, physics, and history reports. Donovan's clear writing, her documentation of sources, a detailed index, and a solid list of sources for further study place The Channel Tunnel above par as research material. An easy-to-use resource that would complement any collection.Delia Fritz, Mercersburg Academy, PACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Needed this for a school project. It provided lots of detailed information. Good book. Recommend for anyone interested in learning about the Chunnel.

This little volume (hardback edition) introduces the reader to the size and complexity of the English Channel tunnel, or "Chunnel" project and gives a brief history of the idea for it. It took a good many years to get the thing under way, since the British historically did not want mainland Europe to have easier access to England than was afforded by the notably uncomfortable boat passage across the choppy waters of the English Channel.I found a couple of questionable numbers on pages 28 and 29 that cast a little suspicion on the technical veracity of the book. But I guess I should accept that the author is an all-purpose writer who probably finds herself straying into subject areas that she doesn't fully understand. Perhaps the publisher should employ some competent pre-publication reviewers.

... because that’s how emotionally drained I feel since swiping the last page on ‘Sadie’. Future readers, stock up on the tissues, and keep them handy at all times while reading. You’ll need them!‘WEST MCCRAY: ”She [Sadie] lived for Mattie, lived to love, care for and protect her little sister, with every breath”.’Sadie Hunter only ever had one goal in life – to protect her little sister, Mattie. To shield her as much as possible from the harsh reality of their poverty-stricken trailer park existence, living with an alcoholic, drug-addicted mother, and her revolving door of boyfriends. For thirteen years Sadie kept her safe, until the dreadful day Mattie was murdered. A year later, sees Sadie on the road, hunting down her sister’s killer. Now Sadie is missing, and radio producer, West McCray is determined to get to the truth of what happened to her. Following her trail, he uses a serialised podcast titled ‘The Girls’ to record and report his findings. May Beth’s (who owns the trailer park, and has a Grandmother’s love for Sadie) only wish is that West finds Sadie and brings her home to her.I’ve been anticipating the release of ‘Sadie’ forever, pre-ordered it in June, and have yet to see a review under 4-stars. Last year I was fortunate enough to read ‘Some Girls Are’ (all the stars from me), so I was already a fan of Courtney Summers, and her ability to tackle timely, tough, real world teenage issues, in a realistic, emotional, thought-provoking manner. The former was dark in places, but ‘Sadie’ is even bleaker, so if you’re expecting a happy book then this is not the read for you. Warning for sensitive and disturbing content. References are used sparingly, and avoid great detail, but are still horrible to read. Also if you are feeling low, or dealing with a stressful situation in your own life, this may not be the right time to pick up ‘Sadie’, as it won’t cheer you up. Although it may put your own problems into perspective!I was immediately drawn to Sadie as a character, even before I got to her POV. It’s impossible not to warm to someone who has so much love for another human being, who is selfless to such an extreme that she fails to care about her own well-being and future. Reading her POV only further cemented my love for Sadie, and I feared for her safety, prayed she wouldn’t sacrifice herself in her search for answers, and quest for revenge. All I wanted for Sadie’s future was the kindness, love, and happiness she so richly deserved. There were so many emotional moments, but one part that really got to me was the reveal of who came up with the title for the podcast, and the reason it was called ‘The Girls’ (which went beyond the obvious just so you know).I thought it was realistic, yet shocking, the amount of people who encountered Sadie on her journey, saw she was in distress, yet did nothing. This is a real, current issue of people not wanting to get involved for a variety of reasons – the topmost being that we all have so much going on in this fast-paced world, and we just don’t have the time or the energy to help out.‘Sadie’ is an ambitious book (especially for the YA genre), that is completely different from anything I have ever read, and I applaud Courtney Summers for writing it. Chapters alternating between the podcast and Sadie’s POV were a unique way to structure a novel, and really upped the originality. Also cute how Macmillan Publishing has released an actual podcast, available on iTunes (which I have yet to listen to, but plan to). Very cool accompaniment! My current top YA read for 2018! This one’s going to be hard to beat. Courtney Summers, whatever you plan on writing next, I will be there hitting the ‘pre-order’ button. Recommend to all the adults and teens in my life.

At the time I’m writing this review, it’s been a couple of days since I finished Sadie, and I still haven’t fully processed it. This is one of those stories that seeps into your bones somewhere along the way, and it changes the way you look at the world a little. It is the best mystery—and one of the best books, period—that I have ever read, and it is also one of the bleakest, most devastating reading experiences of my life. You know, going into this story, that Sadie’s little sister’s body has just been found, and Sadie is on a mission to track down the man she believes is responsible. Besides the fact that it’s a story partially told through podcast episodes (which is such an incredible touch), that’s all you really need to know. This isn’t about what happens so much as it is about coming to know and love Sadie—and to know and love Mattie, too, through her memories. It’s about recognizing that the society we live in has this terrifying, grimy layer that nobody wants to talk about, where little girls are never really safe, and children are forced to grow up way too fast, to become adults in replacement of the parents they didn’t ask for. With a mother suffering from addiction, a community that looked the other way far too many times, and a life of barely keeping food on the table, much less having any real opportunities to succeed, Sadie feels like such an old soul. I don’t know how many readers will struggle to relate to the age of her inner monologue, but from another woman whose circumstances never quite allowed me to feel like a child, I saw so much of myself in the cynical, pragmatic way Sadie views the world around her. It’s hard enough to grow up poor and in a broken family, but Sadie’s also queer—she doesn’t label herself, but explains her sexuality in ways that heavily point to pansexuality—and she stutters, which forms a barricade between her and the rest of the world. Her representation feels so valid and genuine, and it broke my heart every time she mused about how imprisoned she felt by her struggles with speech.More than anything else about Sadie’s character, though, I loved the fierce, maternal determination she has for taking care of Mattie—and, once Mattie is gone, for finding her killer and dishing out justice. Every memory of Mattie, whether told through her view of their adopted grandmother May Beth’s, is beautiful and haunting. The tremendous amount of guilt that Sadie carries as she blames herself for what went wrong had me completely breaking down in passages, and I’ll admit without shame that I read the last several chapters through tears. The most brutal part of it all is that, somehow, it feels like Sadie’s story could be based on a real girl—no, on countless real girls, all over the world.Without spoiling the plot, I want to warn you that this book focuses heavily on child abuse and sexual assault, and it is broken down in the most honest, agonizing ways. There’s also a solid portrayal of how deceptive abusers can be, as the abusers in question are shown to have fooled so many people. But there’s also another side to the representation here, as we see Sadie’s intense solidarity with other abused girls, and her desperate need to protect and defend them, even though (perhaps especially though) she feels that she failed to protect and defend her sister. There’s not much else I can tell you now, because I think it’s the kind of story that you should go into without too many expectations. Just climb in, let Sadie take you for a ride and tell you her story, and try not to let your heart get too broken in the process. This is a phenomenal story, and I know that I will be thinking about it for a long, long time to come.

This is a good book about a difficult topic. Triggers abound in this novel about child abuse and assorted other misdeeds. You have been warned. But, it is an interesting story about 2 young sisters, one dead, one missing and the sad circumstances that lead to their troubled end. The book is narrated by the missing girl and the other narrator is a radio (serial-type) podcaster/broadcaster who takes up the cause of finding out who killed the first sister while trying to locate the missing second sister. It is quite the adventure. I give is 3.5 stars because the narrative was hard to follow at times but in general it was a worthy read. Hug your babies tonight. ⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 - #book #bookstagram #booknerd #bookish #childabuse #abuse #bookworm #read #readersofinstagram #reader

One of the best guide books I've read in a long time (I read about a dozen or more each year). Book is laid out by geographic areas with maps at the beginning of each section with number-coded entries that correspond to the topic-specific two-page write-ups with beautiful accompanying photographs of the sites. Well-written with a bit of wit that makes for both informative and entertaining reading. An excellent complement to your Fodor's, Lonely Planet, or Eyewitness. While not all of these sites might warrant a full-day venture, the maps make it easy to add one of these lovely sites to your "regular" stops. Highly recommended.

"Anyone who has anything to do with university finances will learn something from Smith's book. It should be required study for anyone in administration, from a department chair to the president, and those who want to intelligently contribute to discussions that involve allocation of resources, strategic planning, research funding, or philanthropy. Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street (a John Hope Franklin Center Book)

From Publishers Weekly

The timely question, What caused the current global financial crisis? provokes answers usually aimed at the level of institutions and the more abstract market logic. Ho's refreshing ethnography of the daily lives of Wall Street investment bankers takes another tack and outlines a web of practices, beliefs and structures that may be vital to understanding what keeps the market system in place despite built-in instabilities. Ho, a former business analyst and now an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Minnesota, unpacks constant downsizing, high risk/high reward job liquidity, shortsighted compensation structures, prestige and the ruse of shareholder value. Her keen eye for the significance of space illuminates workplace narratives, e.g., segregating staff by floor, function and prestige; constant and lavish recruiting events at Princeton and Harvard; and anticlimactically tawdry office space for most workers. The author exposes how elite undergraduates are immersed in a culture promoting finance as the only legitimate job, how educational pedigrees reinforce the financial world's self-image—while the actual jobs remain rigidly hierarchical (stratifying women, people of color and non–Ivy League graduates), highly unstable and isolating, encouraging a culture in which making money is the only value. Review

“Liquidated is a must-read book for anyone interested in how legions of recruits from Ivy League colleges come to espouse and enact the twisted bundle of class interests and market ideology that constitutes neoliberal capitalism.” (Kathryn Dudley American Studies)“Liquidated is an interesting description of many of the practices and orientations that exist in large investment banks, one that confirms what the reader may suspect: that these institutions are forcing-grounds for the sort of hubris and invulnerability that goes with the phrase ‘Masters of the Universe’, the incomprehensible money that sales staff receive, and the idea that they are ‘doing God’s work’. It also, however, indicates the reverse of the strength of the social studies of finance. Liquidated may help explain why those in investment banks think and operate in the ways that they do.” (James G. Carrier Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute)“[A] unique portrait of the industry that asks pertinent questions about constant change, job insecurity, and the banker’s identity. . . . Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street asks many questions that those who work in the investment field should ask themselves. . . . Although many in the financial industry will not agree with Ho’s hypotheses and conclusions, they will be challenged by the questions she raises and enthralled by the body of fieldwork she presents.” (Janet J. Mangano Financial Analysts Journal)“Ho’s refreshing ethnography of the daily lives of Wall Street investment bankers . . . outlines a web of practices, beliefs and structures that may be vital to understanding what keeps the market system in place despite built-in instabilities.” (Publishers Weekly)“Ho's study shows the intense competitiveness that is instilled in these primarily Ivy League recruits even before they are finished with their Bachelor's degrees. And she examines the myth that stockowners and companies are best served by maximizing shareholder profits. If anything, this book gives faces to the people who work in that abstract entity called Wall Street that seems to affect our world so much of late. I highly recommend it, especially if you have no idea how the world of high finance operates.” (James Franco The Huffington Post)“The book contains many wonderful insights, and is a veritable mine of quotations from Wall Street participants. . . . The book is, moreover, extremely well written throughout . . . . [A]n informed and informative text.” (Brett Christophers Environment and Planning A)“[E]ngaging and hard to put down. . . Karen Ho’s book is a must-read for anyone contemplating joining one of the major global banks. . . . Actually, even faculty of our elite schools are starting to question why so many of their graduates end up in finance. Karen Ho’s book should be required reading for students and faculty at these schools.” (Ben Lorica Quant Network)“After several decades when anthropologists at last overcame their inhibitions concerning the study of money, Karen Ho’s book . . . seems to mark a coming of age for the contemporary discipline. . . . The intelligence of its author shines through Liquidated. . . . I found it rewarding to read and reflect on, a landmark in the burgeoning anthropology of money.” (Keith Hart American Ethnologist)“Although written for a mostly academic audience, the book becomes easily digestible because of the summaries Ho adds in each section. She connects well the main theme throughout any areas of the book. Ho’s views should not be considered ‘anti-Wall Street’ but viewed as an analysis of Wall Street’s effect on the American community and the financial markets. This book should be read by Wall Street investment bankers and corporate managers to better understand the social values and responsibilities of corporations and the role that they play in the American community.” (Linda Kee-Koa International Examiner)“Karen Ho has picked an excellent time to publish her fascinating new study . . . of Wall Street banks. . . . As field-sites go, Wall Street is not classic anthropological territory: ethnographers typically work in remote, third-world societies. . . . Ho nevertheless embarked on her study in classic anthropological manner: by blending into the background, listening intently, in a non-judgmental way – and then trying to join up the dots to get a ‘holistic’ picture of how the culture works. That patient ethnographic analysis has produced a fascinating portrait that will be refreshingly novel to most bankers.” (Gillian Tett Financial Times)

Karen Ho is an anthropologist who worked briefly for an investment bank on Wall Street in the 1990s. Her work was cut short by a downsizing, but she later returned to Wall Street to do field research for a PhD. Her topic: the culture of investment banking. Much of her research was based on interviews with relatively junior analysts and associates; eventually her dissertation was recycled into "Liquidated." The book is packed with interesting insider information about how investment bankers are recruited on Ivy League campuses, how they toil away like slaves in cubicles, and how their lives are warped by the values of greed, competition, and always looking smart. At one point the author says that investment bankers go through life "always looking for the next Harvard" -- which sums things up nicely. If some young person you know is thinking of a career on Wall Street, give him or her a copy of "Liquidated".The book debunks the myth that capitalist markets are like laws of nature, irresistible and beyond moral judgment. In reality, markets are made up of people who have ideologies, interests, networks, and power, all of which shape markets. It is hardly a coincidence, for example, that Wall Street's ideology of "shareholder value" and its mania for corporate restructuring dovetail nicely with the fee-based compensation system of investment bankers. Unfortunately, I couldn't give the book five stars. For one thing, it is dense with anthropological jargon. Even worse, it pretends to offer a grand theory of how finance has shaped global capitalism, even though the author lacked access to top Wall Street managers and to the big company CEOs in the "real economy" who supposedly bow to their demands. To understand how Wall Street fits into the broader economy, we need to know how the big dogs think and network, not the boys and girls in the cubes.

Karen Ho's Ethnography Liquidated begins with a dedication "For my daughter and son, Mira and August, in the hope that their generation will see greater socioeconomic equality." I'm not certain that Ho's work here will help create greater socioeconomic equality for the next generation, but reading this book will help you understand how the habitus of Wall Street investment bankers is reshaping the world you live in, and the results are frightening to consider.Liquidated is an ethnography of Wall Street and its tribe of investment bankers. Ho spent time "on the ground" working in an investment bank and used her contacts through this short time (six months) to collect interviews and data regarding how Wall Street views itself in relation to the rest of the world, the hierarchies they create, and how the Wall Street focus on short term profits without long term planning is seeping into corporate America and creating a breakdown of the cultural fabric. What Ho reports on is a fascinating world where the concepts of "smartness" (your academic pedigree) and "hard work" (working in excess of 100 hours each week for years) act as cultural cachet to develop a new vision of the working world. Emblems of the hierarchy created in this culture range from the absurd ("you shouldn't wear suspenders because it looks like you spent too much time on your appearance"[73]) to the very literal (tiered elevators only allow access to certain floors, thus creating segregation between "front" and "back" office employees). An investment banker is considered less a real person and more an interchangeable object based on the college they attended ("we have two MITs, three Princetons, two Whartons, and a Harvard guy" [257]). Ho's assertion in Liquidated is that government deregulation of banking standards (such as the Glass-Steagall Act) has given investment banking greater strength and allowed their practices to become commonplace in all forms of business. According to Ho, "the very influence of Wall Street...has generated not only record profits but also volatility, crisis, and a continual existence on the brink of annihilation" (10) for corporate America; this volatility has led to a constant instability of the economy. Investment bankers live in a world of "high risk/high reward", but this model is not transferrable to the majority of corporations and it's creating an unstable environment where the worth of employees is on par with the inventory of the office supply closet. The chapter entitled "Liquid Lives" was perhaps the most telling of the damage Wall Street is doing to our nation. Ho states:"empowered by their prestige and elite educational pedigrees, their experiences of hard work, the moral high ground and historical purchase of shareholder value, and their role as mouthpiece of investor capital, investment bankers learn to thrive in a corporate culture that is characterized by slash-and-burn expediency(252)."Investment bankers live in a culture of incredible volatility; they are interchangeable commodities, so massive layoffs are common in their industry and they have learned to adapt to this world. This mindset of a "slash-and-burn expediency" is being adopted by other corporations, with disastrous results. For Wall Street, employees are interchangeable and therefore liquid commodities that can be released to increase capital for short term gains. This is a portion of the culture that investment bankers are accommodated to, and they believe it is part of a natural evolution for business to proceed in this manner. Investment bankers are rewarded with large bonuses for the work they do, often in excess of $100,000 annually. When investment bankers are inevitably laid off they have a cushion from their bonuses to protect their livelihood until they find new employment. The problem with corporations adopting this model is that regular workers are not compensated as such, so when a company decides to lay off a department so the executive bonus will increase slightly, the people who are laid off do not have a cushion to protect them in the interim. Wall Street, not understanding the world outside their ivory towers, is unable to see how the concept of liquidity cannot apply to every corporation. Unfortunately Wall Street, and by extension the corporate executives these analysts advise, do not understand any concept besides money and are unable to see the damage they are causing to the world. Ho's assertion in Liquidated is that there is a disproportionate distribution of wealth in the United States. A country founded on the ideals of freedom and prosperity has become a land where a shrinking number of people are accumulating a greater amount of the wealth, while the majority of the nation suffers as a result of the actions of this small group. Through her extensive research and attention to data and details, Ho has shown a great understanding of the culture she has studied. If the purpose of anthropology is to help us understand different cultures, Ho has done a great job in showing the history, mythology, and habits of Wall Street as a culture. The language of Liquidated can be difficult to comprehend at times (to quote the great Slim Pickens: "you use your tongue prettier than a twenty dollar whore" [Blazing Saddles]), but the payoff for your diligence in study is worth the challenge. If you have an interest in understanding how our socioeconomic status as a nation has become so disparate and volatile, then you will enjoy Liquidated.

This is really a lame book.First of all, there is no real character development, but I guess that is because there are no real characters. People are just types: the older priest who is an official of the church, the scared veteran with secret power, the upright "knight" of the order who also has secret power and about whom we no nothing at all.Second, it just moves from event to event with little that is scary or mysterious. At one point, the two main characters go into a shadow realm and the descriptions are so boring it is unbelievable. Even when it comes to the lives in daily scene there is no real detail. If they walk into a room that has been ransacked, it just says something like, "The room had been searched and things were strewn about. In the kitchen there was a dirty sink and floor, and the smell of something unpleasant." That's it??? Things were strewn around??? Lame. There is also a bad habit of pulling stuff out of the ear. The church has an order of knights almost no one knows about, but they have blackhawk helicopters. Then they find another order of knights within the order that no one knew about. The main guy has a power. Suddenly we find he can do X. Then later he can suddenly do Y. Seems a bit like a cheat to back the guy into a corner where he will die and then suddenly say something like "he turned on his power of invisibility."Every knight has a sword he is given when he is knighted. When the supernatural forces show up, the knights shoot guns at them. Guns don't work, but later we find out that swords do have an effect. So why wouldn't they have swords to fight the evil? Stupid.

My initial draw was that the Knights Templar connection, but I quickly discovered that this was more of a supernatural action/gore/military treatment of good vs. evil that lacked much thoughtful character development. I wanted to take the journey with the lead character -- his dedication to the fight was admirable, and his under-wraps psychic abilities interesting -- but things were so one-dimensional, I found myself thinking of alternative scenes and dialogue that could give a little more depth to the story. The book could use a good editor and proofreader as well. The premise is certainly interesting, but for me, the execution left a lot to be desired. Maybe I'm just not into the gore and testosterone fest, but I found myself wanting at least one female character who didn't die a horrible death -- not a romance, simply a female presence that tempered the boys club feel.If seeking more interesting books about the Knights Templar, I would suggest Katherine Kurtz & Deborah Turner Harris's "The Adept" series. The characters are well-developed, the plots interesting, the action multi-layered, and there's even a modicum of humor, despite the "OMG, is the world going to end?" aspect of all such paranormal premises.

The main reason I love this story is the fact that it's involvement of Templers, a group that has fascinated me since I first saw The Maltese Falcon. This story does not relate to the first in any way but being extremely curious I did a lot of reading on the Knights of Malta and the Knights Templar. So when I saw the title to this novel I was intrigued. Now that I have read it I can say I was very happy to have found it. The story line is not a rewriting of a thousand other stories (not necessarily a bad thing as long as each was holds my attention) But having read thousands of books since the mid 50's any plot with a freshness is appreciated greatly and this fits the bill. I found it hard to lay aside when I had to sleep, eat or other stuff. And found myself looking around for someone to share my thoughts with (sadly my wife hates anything outside of true crime) so I would call my eldest two times zones earlier then me (WHOA! the language at 2 or 4 (his time) in the morning. The ideas, creatures and characters are not totally new but not over used either, so the whole thing gives a fresh interesting and fast paced storyline.

This first story in the Templar Chronicles makes a good start, and the plot is original - lots of twists and a good mystery. The main character is not a devout Catholic, rather, he's more a brilliant but broken-hearted dark hero with a scarred soul who is determined to teach The Adversary a lesson he won't forget. Dealing with a fallen archangel won't be easy, especially when the Archangel has a human pawn almost as evil as he is. Lots of action in more than one country and even in another dimension! I really enjoyed reading this story.

Upon learning that Joseph Nassise also co-authored the Rouge Angel series, with one of my favorite story characters in Ms. Creed, I expected that I would enjoy his own stories. And, I do! I like Cade Williams being a flawed man, with vengeance in his soul, for the killing of his wife, Gabbi, by a supernatural being. Thus begins the heart of this series. I look forward to the next book in this realm of 7 books total. I am also happy that this author has embraced Kindle Unlimited as a way to present his books, otherwise, I may not have had the opportunity to meet Cade, Gabbi, and the rest of Echo Team. Thank you.

There is a sense of slow burn in terms of character development here, but it is very serious in tone. (I was thinking if I met the author I would probably go Heath Ledger era joker on him and ask "Why So Serious?") There are a lot of characters and abilities thrown at you at the outset, but I think that is just the author giving the reader a lot of credit. It is not Proust introducing new characters consistently for 8 volumes, but I almost seriously made notes about which character did what and held what job and title and political faction. I will read the next two books in the series and make my mind up as to the slow-burn multi-verse approach, but it is not easy to read in spurts if you are looking for something to read casually. The content is good, the tactics and sense of motion / action are really tight and I think well written. It just kind of feels like I started reading a sequel without knowing how to read or access the prequel. Hope to find the answers in the next book.
