About the Author

Glenn Hubbard, policymaker, professor, and researcher. R. Glenn Hubbard is the dean and Russell L. Carson Professor of Finance and Economics in the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University and professor of economics in Columbia’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a director of Automatic Data Processing, Black Rock Closed-End Funds, and MetLife. From 2001 to 2003, he served as chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers and chairman of the OECD Economic Policy Committee, and from 1991 to 1993, he was deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Treasury Department. He currently serves as co-chair of the nonpartisan Committee on Capital Markets Regulation. Hubbard’s fields of specialization are public economics, financial markets and institutions, corporate finance, macroeconomics, industrial organization, and public policy. He is the author of more than 100 articles in leading journals, including American Economic Review, Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Money, Credit, and Banking, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Quarterly Journal of Economics, RAND Journal of Economics, and Review of Economics and Statistics. His research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and numerous private foundations.   Tony O’Brien, award-winning professor and researcher. Anthony Patrick O’Brien is a professor of economics at Lehigh University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1987. He has taught principles of economics for more than 20 years, in both large sections and small honors classes. He received the Lehigh University Award for Distinguished Teaching. He was formerly the director of the Diamond Center for Economic Education and was named a Dana Foundation Faculty Fellow and Lehigh Class of 1961 Professor of Economics. He has been a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University. O’Brien’s research has dealt with issues such as the evolution of the U.S. automobile industry, the sources of U.S. economic competitiveness, the development of U.S. trade policy, the causes of the Great Depression, and the causes of black—white income differences. The textbook itself is fine-- it's the one required for my class so I don't really get a choice.I really like the looseleaf version, though. Here's why: my professors don't always have us read chapters in order to match the lessons. So what I do is I keep the textbook in one binder and my class notes in another, tabbed binder that's organized by lesson. As I do the reading for class, I move the relevant chapters to the divider with the notes from the corresponding lesson. This way it's easier to find everything without having to page through the entire book. Definitely a plus over the traditional, bound textbooks. The quality of the paper is fine though I have noticed that the pages are getting a bit strained around the hole punches. It would be worth it for the company to look into how to reinforce the pages there.

The description of the product claimed that the book and Pearson access code would be brand new. However, when the package arrived, the seal for the Pearson eText Access Card was already broken. When I attempted to use the online access code, the Pearson website said that the code had already been used and told me to buy another one.

My teacher is using the latest addition of this book but it cost $130 so I decided to order this version from Amazon for $17 and it has exactly the same information that he is teaching us from his book. This was one of the smartest decsions I could have made.

This book was very helpful in explaining concepts that I did not grasp from the lectures. Very informative graphs and example problems. When I didn't understand something in the class, I was able to read the book and completely understand the concepts. This book wasn't required for my course, but it was a VERY good decision to purchase it. I used it a often, and it paid off as I made an 'A'. This was not a simple course at my university either. Definitely worth the purchase!!

The book itself was very nice. It had some laminated pages which I thought were really interesting. It came fast and in good condition. I would definitely recommend it to any college student like myself or anyone interested in macroeconomics.

Far cheaper than the bookstore rental, plus came in great shape. Definitely saved money when I was tight on cash in the summer session.Content-wise, I can see why the professor chose it. The rental period lasted longer than the course, so I had a month and a half or so of extra time. It goes into good depth and is actually pretty digestible.Highly recommend purchasing this way. After all, a fundamental econ assumption is that given the choice between two very similar goods, people go for the cheaper option :^)

Noah Back in the village we grabbed several lengths of nylon rope and three sets of climbing gear. Then we tramped around the mountain, climbing bluffs and powering through scrub as we circled the massive cylinder. Once buried deep underground, the silo now stood at the outermost edge of the island, its eastern side fully exposed to the elements and dropping hundreds of feet to the ocean below.   I shivered every time I saw it from this angle. The silo looked like a bird on an unsteady perch. A few hundred more feet of erosion and our supposedly indestructible lifeboat would’ve crashed into the sea along with the rest of Idaho. It was a freaking miracle we’d survived.   Scanning the seaward-facing concrete, I tried to visualize where the back exit should be. So much had changed while we were inside the Program. I squinted into the sun, probing the pockmarked surface with my eyes, but came up empty. I was about to suggest we go back for binoculars when Akio’s finger darted out. “There.”   He’d spotted an indentation maybe forty yards to our right and a dozen down. But I couldn’t see if there was a door. “Could be,” I agreed. “But how do we check?”   I glanced at the top of the silo, unreachable now with the mountainside gone.   Can’t get up, can’t go down. What a mess.   But Akio had seen more than just the possible entry point. “There’s a ridge below us that runs around the silo. I think we can get above the opening and rappel down to it.”   I blinked at him. “Rappel. Down the cliff. Over the ocean.”   Akio shrugged, the ghost of a smile appearing on his lips. “You have a better idea?”   “I do not.” My throat worked, but there was no other way. “So let’s do it.”   Akio took the lead. We worked along a sharp defile to reach the ridge. It was a full three feet wide—plenty big enough to feel comfortable if there hadn’t been a hundred-yard death drop on the left side. As it was, I could barely breathe.   I heard Kyle gasping behind me and took solace knowing I wasn’t the only one about to crap his pants. For his part, Akio moved confidently, circling to a wider cleft above the indentation. Once inside there, I put my back against solid stone and tried to slow my stampeding heart.   “We’re lucky.” Akio patted a triangular spike of rock jutting up in the center of the cleft. “We can tie off on this. I was worried two of us would have to anchor the line with body weight.”   I shivered, thinking about that insane prospect, as Akio began securing ropes. He produced two sets of carabiners and snapped them in place, then handed me an ascender. “For the climb back up. Wouldn’t want to forget.”   I shoved mine deep into a pocket. There was nothing left to do but go.   “Okay,” I said. “All right. Okay.”   “One of us should stay here,” Akio said. “To watch the lines.”   Kyle’s hand flew up. I shot him a dirty look, but nodded. I was in charge of this mission. I had to go over the side.   Akio offered to go first, but I shook my head roughly. If I didn’t do it now, I never would. I clipped in and took a deep breath. Every kid in Fire Lake had gone rappelling at one time or another at Starlight’s Edge summer camp. This wasn’t novel. But a quick zip down a scouted pitch on lines laid by professionals was a little different from stepping off a vertical cliff above a death drop and hoping Kyle didn’t accidentally let you die. We had no idea if this was even the right place. I’d have to climb back up either way.   Just don’t look down. That’s always good advice, but especially now. Don’t. Look. Down.   Three deep inhales.   I stepped backward off the cliff.   The line played out easily. I worked cautiously down the face, being careful with my speed. After three bounds, I reached the indentation and was forced to look between my feet. I blanked out the crashing waves far below, focusing on the opening. It was a small cave of roughly the same dimensions as a school bus. I lowered myself to a lip where I could stand and scrambled to safer footing.   A weathered blast door was tucked into the back of the recess before me.   I let out a huge sob of relief.   I called up to Akio, detached from the line, and approached the door. There was a wheel-locking mechanism. As Akio landed softly behind me, I grabbed it with both hands and yanked. The wheel didn’t budge.   My heart oozed through my shoes and off the cliff. This door hadn’t been opened in millennia, and was exposed to the sea. Of course it didn’t just spin. And we’d brought nothing to cut the oxidation. This ball of rust might never open. Why hadn’t I thought of this before?   Akio unclipped and joined me in the back of the cave. We tried the wheel together, but it might as well have been part of the mountainside. I collapsed with an exasperated grunt. Akio sat down beside me and squeezed his forehead.   “We probably should have thought this through a little more,” he said.   “You think?”   “I bet the door is rusted shut.”   “You are clearly a master of door science.”   “It would’ve been better if we’d brought something to grease the wheel.”   I chuckled sourly. “Let’s have this conversation up there next time.”   “Deal. Of course, the door could also be locked.”   I pressed my fists into my eyes sockets, then petulantly kicked the door. With a weary sigh, I fumbled for the radio in my pocket. Kyle could run back to the village and get what we needed. If the door was locked . . . well, that would be that.   I was fiddling with the frequency when the wheel next to my head abruptly started rotating. My eyes bugged. I grabbed Akio’s knee. We scrambled to our feet as it spun several times, then stopped. Hinges groaned as the portal swung inward.   Sarah Harden poked her head out. “Took you long enough.”   I blinked. Opened my mouth. Closed it.   Sarah’s blue eyes rolled skyward. “A thousand tons of rock just rained down on us. Did you think we’d just sit around waiting for you bozos? Please tell me you fixed a rope.”   She stepped from the tunnel, followed by a sniffling Jessica Cale. One by one, three more people emerged. Alice Cho. Susan Daughtridge. Colleen Plummer. All were dirt-smeared. Most were crying. I peered past them into the tunnel, expecting the rest of the silo squad, but no one else appeared.   I aimed a confused glance at Sarah. She shook her head.   My whole body went cold. “Where are the others? Tiffani and Kristen? Devin? Are they trapped somewhere?”   I glanced at Alice, who was staring at nothing. Colleen and Susan were hugging each other and wouldn’t meet my eye. “They’re dead,” Jessica wailed. “The roof caved in and they all died!” She slumped to her knees, sobbing, and covered her face.   Sarah watched Jessica with distaste. No tears marred her eyes. Then she looked at me and I nearly shivered. “Tiffani, Melissa, Emily, Kristen, and Devin were having dinner in the command center. The rest of us were in the living quarters. The blast door between the two levels was shut, which probably saved our lives. When we tried to open it . . .” Sarah grimaced, the first human thing she’d done since emerging. “It’s gone. They’re gone.”   Akio turned to stare at the ocean. I shook my head, unwilling to accept what I was hearing. “It might just be blocked. After talking incessantly about this series to anyone who stands still for more than ten seconds, I figured I owed it an Amazon review.Project Nemesis was a wild ride from the very beginning. The first character I fell in love with was Tack, and then Min, and then Sarah, and slowly I became deeply invested in this story and its frequent twists and shocks. Having read Genesis immediately after it released, I had lots of time to theorize every single possibility of what Chrysalis’s general plotline would be. I was sure about my guesses. I thought I’d finally know what was happening this year, that I’d be prepared.I wasn’t. At all. I was thrown from the very first page, and it just kept going. A few of my major theories were correct, but only on technicalities. This series is one of my favorites, but if you choose to read it, just know that you will never, ever guess what’s coming. It is simultaneously dark and twisty and uplifting and joyful all at the same time. Nemesis has a permanent place on my bookshelf.

I loved the first two books in this series, and read them with one of my students, and have passed this on to him now that I've finished. We both had a lot of theories as to how this would end, and I can tell you that we were both way wrong...and that's great! The twists and turns, the incredible tension between the characters, the evolution of the characters, Reichs absolutely nails it! This series is definitely going to be one that I recommend to my high schoolers regularly, both fans of science fiction and YA. Each book had me on the edge of my seat, and this final chapter does not disappoint, right up to the very last page.

I've read and loved the other two books in the Project Nemesis series (NEMESIS AND GENESIS), so I had high hopes and expectations for CHRYSALIS. Min and Noah are two of my favorite characters, and I had to see what happened to them. WOW. Reichs hits the ground running, and the story does not let up. I don't want to spoil anything, but let's just say the already high stakes get even higher and you're in for a RIDE. Highly recommend!

This is a twist and turn filled joy ride. Rarely do I not see where the book is taking me.. each book was full of unexpected twist and turns. Chrysalis was an excellent end of the story.

Overall, this was a good book and has been a good series. There are many interesting twists and the Lord of the Flies premise is interesting, but with book series there is a point of diminishing returns and that is almost always three. If he writes another book, I won’t buy it. Nothing personal, but after three books I’m done with any series.A note to the author; if no one ever really dies, suspense and tension no longer exist. Without suspense and tension, you don’t have a good dystopian book. It worked for this book, but if you write another book in this series no one will believe anything bad will actually happen to these kids so no one will care when they do.

I'm somewhat of a self-help book addict. I was browsing Pinterest one day and stumbled upon the "konmari method" and was intrigued, so I bought this book for kindle and read it in about an hour. I always thought I was a very organized person (because everything I owned had a designated, labelled place and my house was always super clean), but after reading this book I realized I was nothing more than a skilled hoarder. I locked myself in my house for 6 straight weeks (seriously, only came out for absolute necessary obligations and appointments) and decluttered the ever-living hell out of my house. The only thing that slowed me down was waiting for every Tuesday to roll around when the big donation truck would come and haul off all my unwanted items, or waiting for every Monday for the trash collection. I probably discarded well over 100 bags of clutter in that 6 weeks and earned over $400 selling the big-ticket items via social media, which I used to make my house prettier. I also donated an entire trunk full of books, CDs, and DVDs to my local library. My home's available storage used to be completely maxed out, and now I have empty drawers everywhere! I also have no less than 40 completely empty plastic storage bins in my garage that were previously full of clutter (and the storage bins are the next thing that will be sold!). Reading this book was life-changing. While I didn't follow it to the T (I do not thank my socks for their service every day LOL), it is the best feeling in the world to look around a room and realize you love every single item in said room. I no longer feel weighed down by "stuff". I still have a few odds and ends to finish up in my house, but I'm about 90% done at this point and loving it. I never knew getting rid of things could be so addicting. I also never thought I was the kind of person who could ever throw away a photo, but by the time I got to the sentimental items category, I discarded an entire garbage can full of photos without hesitation and it felt great!

Here's what the book says: touch every item in your home and if you "love it" then keep it. If you don't get that warm and fuzzy feeling of love, throw it away. There. Now you don't have to read it. Seriously, de-cluttering and organizing can have a huge positive impact on life. But the way this book approaches the topic is so silly and juvenile that I don't understand why it's a best seller. People: use your common sense and toss the things you don't use that are cluttering up your life. Ok?

First, this book has done for me what I wanted it to do: it’s helping me get rid of junk, albeit not quite in the way the author wants me to do it, but progress is progress, right?I will say the book is somewhat repetitive and it makes the same point over and over (you have too much clutter and you’re keeping it for the wrong reasons); this might be a cold, hard, necessary teaching method to break the habit of keeping clutter, so I won’t dwell on that. On the other hand though, in areas where I wanted more detail, such as the steps she provides to actually do “decluttering”, or “tidying” as the author calls it, I found I wanted more detail. While clothing (for example) is well covered, entire categories of typical American “stuff” are left out, such as cupboards, kitchen tools, towels/linens, sporting goods, major electronic and computer gear, and the garage (and the myriad of categories of stuff found in there). There is absolutely no mention of a garage. The book, to me, is aimed heavily towards a female audience, and I’m not saying that in a sexist way. There is nothing wrong with that, it’s just a missed opportunity to be more inclusive; men have stuff too, and the vast majority (not scientifically measured, just my impression) of the examples in the book are aimed at the types of belongings women *typically* own, again please don’t take this the wrong way. Most of the client examples the author mentions are women, with perhaps only two male clients I can remember. This is only notable to the extent that many pages are spent discussing organizing purses and none spent on organizing screwdrivers. I own zero purses but lots and lots of screwdrivers (along with other tools), and they badly need organizing. But I think I’ll be able to apply the technique to my garage as well as my closet. So for any of you out there who also own screwdrivers and they are in need of organization, perhaps you’ll be in the same boat as me, wondering why your tool collection was never even mentioned.I would like the author to focus more on suggesting *donating* the items she so desperately wants us to discard. She gives good reasons for not giving your old stuff to your family, but surely there’s a better home for unwanted clothing than the trash. I’ve made it a point to donate mine. Perhaps this type of thinking will make it into the second edition.Finally, as the author is from Japan, some of the cited mystical benefits of “tidying up” may register as goofy to Americans. Thanking your belongings for a job well done, as she suggests, is a form of consideration which may not resonate. But this is a matter of personal preference and posture; it certainly can’t hurt but I feel all but the most committed American readers may find it a bit campy.In any case, I did get rid of a lot of stuff on my first round, and indeed it felt good to do so. I’ve got a long way to go, but at least the author has given me a rational framework for examining an item and deciding “should it stay or should it go”. More is going than ever before.

The Mind of War offers a different spot in the dissecting John Boyd's career and theories than the more biographical option offered by Robert Coram. Hammond, who knew and worked with Boyd during his time at War College, focuses on how Boyd thought and how his thoughts were expressed with only brief touches on lifetime events. This book helps one understand one of the basics of modern strategy, showing how Boyd achieved his ideas, and where the emphasis should be. An excellent add to any strategic collection.

This book attempts to examine and explain to the non-specialists the revolutionary ideas of late Colonel John Boyd (USAF ret.) that literally showed the way to the transformation of the U.S. Defense Establishment into a 21st Century structure. The fact that in the end Boyd failed in his vision does not bode well for the future of this establishment.After this book was written, Robert Coram wrote an excellent biography of Boyd that also provided the reader with a detailed exposition of Boyd's ideas. Also in a highly technical and quite well done doctorial work, Royal Dutch Air Force Officer Frans Osinga provided an excellent dissertation on Boyd's development of his strategic theory of war from his original research and development work on aircraft fighter tactics. So don't these two fine books supercede this one?Well for this reviewer at least they don't, they compliment this book. Boyd was a brilliant complicated thinker and Hammond's work will help to clarify Boyd's thinking and his approach to tactics, strategy, and war. This book clearly shows how Boyd, and his "fighter mafia", could have made the U.S. Department of Defense the center of national security policy instead of the center for log rolling and pork barrel politics that it is today. All who recognize Boyd's worth would be advised to read this book

This is an excellent book about a man who, in his own words, chose "to do" and not "to be." What he did was defeat all comers in forty seconds in aerial combat, teach his techniques to others, evaluate how he did it to create the energy maneuvering evaluation of all fighter aircraft, develop the OODA loop, and change how most militaries look at the art of war.What did the US Air Force allow this brilliant and obnoxious man of impeccable integrity to be? He was passed over twice to make full colonel. He came back to the Pentagon as a civilian paid one day per pay period. Our Marines loved him and history will treat this nobel hero kinder than the h u t a Air Force which wanted to kill the best fighter in the world because he developed it cheaply.

I have read 2 books about Boyd, He was one of the true great minds of war and his brilliance in finding the truth and getting results put him above most. If you want to learn about aircraft design and how the military works, this is a book that you need to read. It was Boyd and his band of followers that developed the true Art of war and how to get things done despite what higher ups had to say.

After reading the book "Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed The Art Of War" I was curious to learn more about John Boyd and his theories. So far I've read the book twice and need to do it again. Huge amount of information, some at odds with the first book as pertains to Col Boyd's life BUT the expansion of the OODA Loop and others is really food for thought. As a retied fighter pilot some of the data was surprising and a lot of it was of the "wow!, so that's where that came from" stuff. If you are interested in how an air force pilot changed the way the USMC and USA goes into battle this is a book for you.

Here you can taste a bit of Boyd’s intellectual intensity together with his numerous accomplishments in all US military echelons. This man managed to change how to fight and design fighters but also described the intellectual tools he used to do his contributions. This is priceless and is mainly related to his ability to do creative synthesis + voracious curiosity. He end up realizing that schools teach us how to do analysis leaving synthesis behind, but synthesis is the key skill to adapt therefore to thrive in life.

There is a lot in this that is gushing in its idolisation of Boyd. It tends to jump from one point to another without taking the effort to thoroughly explain Boyds ideas and history. The development of the F16 is dealt with briefly and you end up asking yourself why it mattered. Apart from building a cheaper successor to the F15 no reason is given. Burton and the Bradley fighting vehicle are mentioned but not in any depth. This book is good in places but frustrating at times as well. I think more effort in the details and editing would have made it more logical and read better. They should have been brave enough to make it twice as long. This book is only a couple of hundred pages of large print. Montgomery got 3 volumes of 800 pages and small print. The last volume of Montgomery was 1200 pages. This book might give you a taste but is short of doing Boyd full justice.
