A very well documented explanation of how slavery shapes southern politics. However I think a significant explanation for contemporary racism was excluded and not even mentioned. The war on drugs has continued to demonize African Americans for the last 50 years.The purpose of the 1971 “War on Drugs” was to marginalize blacks as revealed in the memoir by Nixon’s Chief of Staff, John Erlichman.“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies the anti-war left and black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black – but getting the public to associate hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities, we could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about drugs, of course we did.”Shifting the responsibility of drug abuse from criminal justice to public health would alleviate racial inequality and a host of other social problems. This premise in no way justifies drug use but this problem could be better addressed by public health. The criminal justice approach has exacerbated the animosity between law enforcement and minority populations. Enforcing drug laws justifies law enforcement’s excessive traffic stops and arbitrary hassling of minorities in their neighborhoods. The primarily minority prison population has increased from 300,000 in 1970 to 2,200,000 in 2010.As was demonstrated in the 1920’s, prohibition not only failed to decrease alcohol use but created an underground economy supported by the mafia. The prohibition of drugs has not decreased drug use, but strengthened gangs, increased crime and consequently the prison population. Most crime is conducted between gangs involved with territorial drug sales.The $40 billion spent by federal/state governments for drug related arrests and incarceration, not to mention the estimated $70 billion tax revenue from drug sales could be shifted to addressing education, poverty and mental health. Drug addiction and related health problems are better addressed by public health than incarceration.

This is an incredible study by the authors and they deserve kudos. The authors write about and explain the persistence of conservative racism in the South. They explain the persistence of racism by use of behavioral path dependence to explain why southern whites harbor higher levels of racial resentment than other parts of the country. They show that the strong levels of racial resentment are connected to the slave holding history of the South. Using post-Civil War history, they show that not only individual beliefs regarding racism shaped this resentment but the adoption by government institutions of segregation reinforced the racial resentment of southerners. This is a book everyone should read. It addresses the issue that taints all of our politics and helps explain why we cannot get out political and cultural houses in order till we all admit racism is alive and well.

I had run a mock Caldecott unit with my third grade class, and this book wasn’t even on our radar enough to put on our ballots. I had some definite favorites that year, both for the Caldecott Medal and for timeless books I wanted to make sure I bought for my own children (Art & Max; City Dog, Country Frog; Ballet For Martha; Mirror Mirror; It’s a Book; Ubiquitous), and I was initially crushed when some of those favorites weren’t recognized at the ALA awards… Until I went to the bookstore that afternoon, bought A Sick Day for Amos McGee, and realized how amazing it was.

Though Philip Stead had published one book previously, A Sick Day for Amos McGee was his wife Erin’s first illustrated book… and both newbies hit the nail squarely on the head with this charming, timeless book. Amos McGee, zookeeper who will remind adults of Mr. Rogers, is one of the more endearing book characters I can think of. He wakes early each morning, greets even the items around his house and the bus driver, and is extraordinarily devoted to the animals at his zoo. He knows each one intimately, taking care to make them feel comfortable and loved. Until, one day… Amos McGee gets sick. Amos’s tenderness with his animal friends is reflected in the worry they feel about him and the actions they take to ensure that he too feels comfortable and loved. This is the kind of story that makes children and adults alike want to treat their friends and loved ones the same way Amos McGee does.And the illustrations! Erin’s pencil and woodblock prints are done with minimal, reserved color, but are full of details that render each reading of those story new and exciting. I didn’t notice the repeated inclusion of a red balloon, tiny bird, and mouse until the fourth or fifth time that I read the book! Tiny details aside, Erin’s sketches allow the sweet, caring personalities of each character to show through. Readers feel genuinely concerned about the rhino with a runny nose, depicted with constant concern or worry on his face reflecting just how sick he feels, and compassionate toward the shy penguin, drawn with his wings and toes pointed in, as if he’s trying to curl up small enough to go unnoticed.Philip and Erin Stead, thank you for this book. A story of the kindest of friends, timeless illustrations leaving you with more with every reading… It was an instant favorite with my room full of third graders, and it is now a favorite with my own children (2 and 4.5). This is truly one of the most beautifully written children's books and I highly and fully recommend it. My two-year old grandson loves this book and there is such a loveliness and a gentleness to it that makes it appealing for adults as well. Amos tends to the animals every single day, following the same routine, day after day, until one day, he does not show up for work because he is not feeling well. The animals take the same bus Amos takes to get to the zoo and they show up at Amos's house because they miss him.The illustrations reinforce the gentleness and loving nature of the story. This is a book that is meant to be kept on a book shelf for children of all ages - and maybe for adults of all ages as well.Please do not hesitate to add this beautiful book to any child's collection.

This might be the most adorable children's book ever written. There aren't a ton of words to it, so you can make it a fast story if you want to get your kid the heck to sleep. Or you can make up a lot of your own story to the pictures as you go along if you want to inspire that youngster's imagination. A definite must-have for the book shelf (or the floor... or the sink... it all depends on the toddler's mood)!

I just adore this book. It's really a book about friendship, thoughtfulness, and caring. Amos McGee is the zookeeper who is very punctual and spends time with the animals. Amos finds things to do with his animal friends that make them feel good about themselves. One day, Amos gets sick and his animal friends come to his house to care for him while he's ill. They show him the same consideration and affection that he has shown to them.

This book is adorable! The illustrations are nicely done - not too much color that will overstimulate a child. The story is very sweet. My daughter likes looking for the red balloon on each page. It teaches children about kindness, caring and selflessness.

One of the children’s books you don’t get tired of! I swear I saw new details in the illustrations even after reading this 30 times. It is just a sweet, fun, and lovely book.

I found this book in a list of Best Books for Toddlers and checked it out at the library. It has become all of our favorite, and I just purchased a copy of the book for our own collection. It is also the first time my 2 1/2 year old daughter has said someone's first and last name so I thought that was really cute. The book illustrations and story are sweet and beautiful and this really makes it in our top favorite books (and we read a lot of children books). If you like this book, you might also try out The Snail and tne whale, which is also a wonderful book to read aloud and has a sweet story as well. A Sick Day for Amos is a treasured story I enjoy reading and my kids enjoy hearing over and over.

I regret that this book is poorly written; I didn't take Sports Law in law school and was hoping to get a basic grasp on the subject. Unfortunately, a lot of the book is worded poorly and isn't very clear--I find myself using Google to clarify very basic concepts that this book leaves as ambiguous.

Gives a great overall view of this modern type career for both men and women. Provides the nuts and bolts of the career.

Unless you plan to practice in this field, this book will not interest you.But if you do wish to be a sports agent, then this is a great book to learn about all the ins and outs of the process.

I haven't rec'd my instant pot yet. I ordered the 3 quart size. I have been reading through the recipes and I wish I could communicate with the author because I am wondering if I can make these recipes in a 3 quart or if I need to cut the recipe in half?? Also, I have noticed that sometimes the recipe will state "cover with the lid and cook on manual high" and other times it will state "cover and cook on manual high pressure". Are these different settings?? Then I noticed on page 63 Spaghetti Squash Chicken Alfredo that it seems like the recipe is incomplete. If I follow it I will be serving raw chicken (??) I haven't finished reading all the recipes...I hope that was the only incomplete one but I wish the author would proof-read all the recipes and then send out corrections where they are needed to all us buyers.Besides that, the book is great. The recipes sound delicious and relatively easy to make. I guess the proof will be when I get my pot and start making them. Maybe I will send a follow up. :)Follow up....so I got my pot and thought I would try the first recipe (Coconut Porridge) Step 2 said to add the coconut milk but no mention of the 2 2/3 cups of water so I googled the recipe and sure enough, on step 2 you need to add both the milk and the water. I would suggest just getting your recipes online, because I now feel like I need to double check every recipe before I use it. :(

Incorrectly states to use Quick release on nearly all recioes, when quick release shoukd only be used for veggies and pasta. Natural release should be used for most recipes, especially meat, as QR dries out meats and foods.Format/layout is terrible. All recipes could have been written on a single page using different font, spacing and layout, instead of typing a few lines on a 2nd page. Pics would have been nice.

This cookbook told me in detail about the ketogenic diet, the history of its occurrence, its differences from the Atkins diet and its benefits. A large list of recipes adapted for instant pot. All recipes for nutritional composition fully comply with the ketogenic diet. Most of all I liked the dishes from chicken, seafood and vegetarian dishes.

This is an amazing keto resource. Serves as a pretty decent "how to" for keto without getting really in depth. I love how the recipes arent boring either. Lots of exotic tastes and ethnic recipes inside.

The Instant Pot is the only gadget that can replace a slow cooker, rice cooker, and stockpot, and this is the only cookbook with keto diet recipes for this device.

Simple ingredients, easy to follow, great for 2-3 people. Great price! Gives you the basics that used in experimenting with my own recipes.

I can't wait to make these meals! So many great options and keto diet tips. Very helpful. Learned so much.

I was just trying to return this cookbook, but it says I only have 30 days & missed it by 6 days. I am not happy with this cookbook & feel I should be able to return it. We need at least 60 days for returns Amazon.
