Originally I didn't buy this product due to the price, but the price came down and I bought it. I'm glad I did. As a long time superhero fan, I've always thought that the subject of super hero ethics as an interesting topic that gets glossed over in the actual comics. Superman especially has a special place in the DC universe. In many ways, Superman is the hub around which everything in that universe revolves. He's the ethical heart of the Justice League and the example all super heroes are judged against. He's the one who can command the respect of the entire superhero community and indeed normal people as well. Yet he lies to keep his secret identity (mostly to protect his loved ones) and has to make hard choices on a regular basis.It's worth doing to consider Superman's ethics as representative of how we would want our heroes to act if we had them (and of course we do though they don't fly through the air or shoot fire from their eyes). It's also worth considering these things in light of the newest Superman "re-imagining". The Christopher Reeve movies sought to bring a fairly accurate representative of the comic book Superman to the screen. The last two movies have both taken the character further from not only his representation in the comics but also his fundamental character. Since his reason for being it to embody this fundamental character, these movies, especially the latest one loses this essential aspect making Superman into just another Alien with terrifying power and a dark driven nature. In effect they make Superman into a Kryptonian version of Batman. This book is a good way for modern movie goers to reconnect with what Superman is "supposed" to be and provides a good context for the character.

This was a solid read and really inspired me to pick up quite a few graphic novels that were source material. My only gripe is I felt like a few of the chapters were replays of each other with several of the professors basically saying the same thing. Overall it's an entertaining read though.

THE VIEW FROM SPACEAll in all this is an acceptable effort in Wiley-Blackwell's "philosophy and popular culture" series. Editor Mark D. White has done a decent job in putting together a pleasant collection of essays that address a number of the philosophical issues that can be found in the Superman franchise in all of its manifestations: the comic books and all the incarnations and re-boots; the many TV series; and, of course, the movies, one of which will be hitting theaters this Friday. It's worth picking up, but, I think more effort could have been made on a number of fronts. And the presence of numerous typographical and grammatical errors did not help. Overall, it's more than "mild-mannered", but not as "super" as it could have been. Like looking at the phone booth and catching "the Big Blue Boy Scout" right in the middle of changing clothes.EARTH-TWOWhen you think about "the Big Blue Boy Scout" (God how I hated reading that so many times! Stop calling Superman that!), a number of obvious topics come to mind: Superman versus Lex Luthor (check), Superman and the issue of his dual identity (double check), and even Superman as an expression of Nietzsche's "Ubermensch" (gut check!). But I didn't see essays that covered other relevant topics. For example, Superman has his biological parents, with whom he touches base via recordings at the Fortress of Solitude, and his adoptive parents, who found him and raised him in Kansas. What duties does one owe one's parents? Does one owe a duty of friendship to them? I would have liked to have seen Superman's love life investigated. Love is said to be a "second-order" emotion, why was this theme not developed? With so many re-boots and issues of time travel and alternate worlds, why did no one step up to the plate and look at the philosophy of history? Is history written by one man making a choice, or are historical events inevitable? And finally, Superman is not human, as a number of the essays noted. Does his love life with Lois Lane constitute something... unsavory? Or is cross-species sex acceptable when the individuals are as intelligent and self-aware as human beings, when they are moral agents and not moral patients? And so on. In general, the essays herein played it safe, and focused on the obvious philosophical angles: Nietzsche's Ubermensch, the problem of identity, the ethics of superpower, the responsibility of a superman, what is human nature, and, as noted earlier, Superman versus Lex Luthor.GREAT CAESAR'S GHOST!Editor Mark D. White begins the collection with "Moral Judgment: The Power That Makes Superman Human". We get the three schools of ethics, but the focus is on Kant's idea that duties require the "power of judgment sharpened by experience". Yet the example of Lois Lane deciding whether to use blackmail to obtain information for a story that, as a consequence, will also make Metropolis a safer place to live, ignores both the ethical principles that journalists are supposed to adhere to (refer to Jason Southworth and Ruth Tallman's later essay "Can the Man of Tomorrow Be the Journalist of Today") and the fact that Lois Lane is not responsible for ending corruption. Poor judgment on Lois Lane's part, I would think. (And no, the "curse" did not strike here.)FORTRESS OF SOLITUDEA few of the essays were good compare and contrasts. Leonard Finkelman's "Superman and Man: What a Kryptonian Can Teach Us About Humanity" explored human nature by comparing Hobbes' pessimism to Rousseau's compassion. No matter where you start, society eventually makes people swing toward the other end of the spectrum. Carsten Fogh Nielsen's "World's Finest Philosophers: Superman and Batman on Human Nature" compared Hobbes and Hegel. For Hobbes, Man's nature is to be in a constant state of war, whereas Hegel focuses on human beings' need for recognition and outside validation.A few of the essays took the approach that Lex Luthor is more in the right than Superman. Arno Bogaerts' "Rediscovering Nietzsche's Ubermensch in Superman as a Heroic Ideal" shows how Nietzsche`s ideas of self-mastery, self-creation, and challenging the status quo make Lex Luthor more the Ubermensch than Superman (although Lex Luthor does miss the mark). Sarah K. Donovan and Nicholas Richrdson's "Superman Must Be Destroyed! Lex Luthor as Existentialist Anti-Hero" presents Lex Luthor's position that Superman's constant interference in human affairs prevents people from viewing their lives as an ongoing project.CRISIS IN FINITE ESSAYS!Daniel P. Malloy's "Clark Kent Is Superman! The Ethics of Secrecy" was confusing, and wasn't really philosophy. I wish Mr. Malloy hadn't kept his point so... secret. I enjoyed reading Will Herberg's definition of "the American Way" (p. 72) in Andrew Terjesen's "Is Superman an American Icon?", but thought that this essay was more feel-good social commentary than philosophy. Mr. Terjesen made up for this in his second essay, " Can the Man of Steel Feel Our Pain? Sympathy and Superman". Superman is a near-indestructible being from another planet, how can he truly "feel our pain"? Mr. Terjesen explores how one can understand the thoughts and feelings of another by looking at various theories, and gives his essay a nice twist at the end when he suggests that the very rich and well-off could look to Superman as a moral example for sympathizing with the less fortunate.The last essay, Mahesh Ananth's "Why Superman Should Not Be Able to Read Minds" had a good idea but I felt let down. Mr. Ananth tries to show that, although Superman has been shown to have some mind-reading and mind-influencing power, he really shouldn't, and in fact can't. (Wait, what?) Mr. Ananth's definition of "emergentism" (p, 227) seemed to me to be the definition of "dualism". Why call it "emergentism"', then? (Is that even a real word?) I felt that Mr. Ananth's essay was repetitive, and I wish he would have just let me try to read his mind, I think I would have gotten the point a lot quicker.FINAL EDITION of THE DAILY PLANETThis book has gone to press just before the next Superman movie comes out this Friday. Although I have already heard that the movie won't be worth seeing (allegedly), you can make up for any let-down by picking up a copy of this book. John V. Karavitis

My review is somewhat biased, as the Author is my 2nd Cousin. Yet his work speaks for itself. It is a very detailed account of German automobile factories and the workers during the early part of the 20th century. He does go into detail of how the factories responded during WWI and WWII. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the book, on whole is geared towards the academic community, not for the average person, so it might seem a bit slow and cumbersom to non historians. Despite this it is a great work of history worth reading, especially if you like labor history. My only regret is that Bernard passed away from Lou Gherigs disease shortly after the book was published. The history community lost a great and dedicated historian. But it is the sensational nature of the author's findings about the worker slaves and concentration camp inmates used by the company during World War II that one might expect -- or even wish -- to dominate the book. Dr. Bellon is too evenhanded and sincere to fall into this trap, however. The Nazi era is fitted into its proper context at the end of the book, and I am glad I refrained from jumping to this section, though there were moments when, knowing what lay ahead, I was tempted to do just that. The steady, measured pace drawing the reader towards these terrible revelations makes the fact of them even more jarring. The author is at his best here, supplying much-needed color to lives lived in the shadows of enslavement and brutality. I found the photographs of the nameless Russian workers forced to toil for no pay especially haunting in this context. The humanity of these forgotten laborers shines through in both image and word. And it is this warmth for the humanity of all his subjects that may be the author's greatest achievement, above even his thoroughgoing research; people are never demonized in his account, although exploitation and cruelty are certainly treated with the opprobrium they deserve. From the founders of Mercedes and its skilled craftsmen to the untrained machine operators and the women who joined the work force during World War I -- and ultimately to those concentration camp inmates who built the motors that powered the Luftwaffe -- we are drawn into their worlds and, thanks to the author, find much that is recognizable in each. "Mercedes in Peace and War" opens with a chronicle of the company's beginnings, coupled with a thorough characterization of the skilled workforce necessary to make these highly prized luxury automobiles at the turn of the century.We are given a remarkable glimpse into at least a slice of the workers' lives. Occupation, skill levels, wages, education, marital status, age, and newspaper-reading habits are included among the wealth of raw, otherwise dry demographic information the author is able to weave into a compelling narrative. Awesome planner, just what I was looking for;-) I added a few photos so you know what it looks like inside :-)

I’m extremely disappointed by this. This is the same quality as a coloring book I could’ve purchased at the dollar store. Paper is extremely thin. Anything that is considered “wet” inkwise bleeds through multiple pages. In the photo I attached, the shadows are NOT part of the page design. That’s the next few pages showing through.

This planner is exactly what I was looking for. The layout is very organized and perfect for writing out whatever expenses you may have. I also love the weekly pages so I can track takeout and Amazon orders lol. I took photos so everyone could see how the planner looks on the inside.

Love the divided months but most of the planner is taken up with weekly budgeting pages which I don’t use. I needed this for monthly bill bugeting so the weekly pages are going to waste.

I got it for budget planning! The layout is great and it is super user friendly....now only if they came up with a product that will actually make you use it. It lasted only the first week for me then I slacked off. So if you’re diligent this is for you.I need something that an app automatically and accurately transfers and sorts my spending for me.

Love! Plenty if writing space. I love that I can write out monthly and weekly budgets. It's helping already!

Because of various weird family situations with various relatives needing guardians, etc., we've had to do a lot of thinking, and work with lawyers, about estate planning, trustees, trust protectors, etc. In the course of doing so, we've looked at lots of websites and have tried to find comprehensive books about estate planning. This book covers the intersection of pragmatic family issues, as well as technical information about legal devices to handle various estate planning problems. I'm really glad I stumbled on this book, but it would have been so helpful if I had come across it sooner.This is the most comprehensive and best book I've found so far, except for various dry estate planning books targeted to professional financial planners (such as Principles of Estate Planning) It covers various advanced estate planning techniques, such as using life insurance to pay estate taxes, or family limited partnerships, for example. What makes it comprehensible is that it explains everything by means of anecdotes of various client situations the author has encountered. It is missing some information, such as dynasty trusts, or Crummey Letters, etc. so that if your estate planning is elaborate, you will still want to work with a professional (as he states himself on pg. 358), but you will be so much better informed after reading this book.What i really like about this book is that it has a pragmatic and functional roll-up-the-sleeves approach, what are the issues, the pitfalls, and the possible solutions. Also, it addresses important underlying questions that others might not get around to asking when they meet with a lawyer to draft a will, such as whether or not you should even leave an inheritance, what conditions you can put on an inheritance, or how much information you should give to your kids about your estate plan, etc. In contrast, various professional books don't explicitly address issues such as family who are addicts or simply jerks, issues arising from multiple marriages, etc.The only flaw I see is that it is a long bunch of text (albeit very informative and useful), but with no reflective overviews. It would be good if there were summaries and/or charts, tables, lists, etc to pull together or organize some of the very useful information presented here.My local library had an earlier edition of this book, but because of 2012 estate tax law changes, as well as numerous additions, I bought this most recent current edition.

It told me everything I needed to know about how to structure my finances for the possible future. It brought up issues I never thought about and had me considering situations that never occurred to me. The advice is sensical and sound. It cover a wide varieties of possibilities and situations. It is also easy for the lay person to understand and offers many stories to demonstrate circumstances and point. Well written and well thought out. I bought a copy for my Mom as well. It is the best book I could have bought for the subject. It is easy to read and find the relevant info you want. I read it cover to cover though. I learned a lot.

What if you have a hard-earned legacy to pass on, and a son/daughter-in-law that have done nothing but waste money from Day One? That certainly is an uncomfortable position, and the motivation for buying/reading this book. Author Condon, in cooperation with his father, has created thousands of inheritance plans over a combined 70 years of practice; they've also witness the impact of their advice. That's very impressive, and adds additional credibility. The original edition was published in 1995, this is the third.Unfortunately, the reader will soon realize that setting up trusts, etc. is not for the average layman. The good news is that the reader will realize there are solid options and have some ideas with which to discuss more thoroughly with an attorney or potential trustee.Author Condon has seen a long list of inheritance mishaps. A surviving spouse who lost the family money to the last caretaker, a daughter who lost her inheritance to her husband in a divorce, a son who disregarded the inheritance instructions made by his parents in their Living Trust, parents who gave substantial dollars to one child for his medical education but in failing to think through their simple 'divide equally' instructions, created major conflict, a charity that used his client's money to buy Cadillacs for its directors, children who had to give the IRS nearly half their inheritance in death taxes, a daughter who bestowed her entire inheritance to a cult, and a son supposed to handle his disabled sibling's share but instead put it into his own pocket. Having experience those and other problems hopefully provides Condon with the insight to avoid their repetition.Most people only use their Will or Living Trust to say who gets what. Condon, however, recommends programming it to live on after your death. He then posits the 'Big Seven' goals of inheritance planning.1)Program Your Inheritance Plan to Prevent Inheritance Conflicts Among Your Children.2)Protect the Inherited Money from Your Children's Potential Problems - divorce, a bankruptcy trustee, a serious illness, a drug addiction fed by his inheritance, a financially immature daughter, etc.3)Program Your Inheritance Plan to Ensure It Will Be Carried Out. Most clients select one or more of their children - that is not always wise.4)Program Your Inheritance Plan to Protect Your Assets for Your Surviving Spouse. If he/she remarries, half the family wealth may end up with his/her new spouse she may have additional children (or stepchildren) - all of whom might share in your half, your children may pressure your surviving spouse for an 'early inheritance,' he/she may become physically or mentally incapacitated - leaving him/her and the family wealth at the mercy of the 'last caretaker' or 'final friends,' or your surviving spouse may not have the capability to manage the family wealth.5)Eliminate the Death Tax - the IRS may make your children pay a 'death tax.'6)Prevent the IRS from Getting Two Bites of the Same Apple - eg. when your children die, whatever is left of their inheritance will be taxed again.7)Keep Your Children and Property out of Probate Court. Between attorneys' fees, executor fees, court costs, publishing fees, and appraisal fees, this can consume, on average, about 5% of your estate. It is also time-consuming, and can last from 9 months to two years - if there are no problems.Leaving an unequal inheritance because of economic disparity between children can create a bitter rift. Talk with them first. Nine times out of ten the successful child will become angry and incredulous - if this occurs, you should reconsider. Another alternative is to make small lifetime gifts to your needier child, given an insurance policy to your needier child. Condon has found that equalizing after death does not work - eg. appreciation, using an educated guess, or better yet, let each share the risk.Making one of two or more children the Successor Trustee of your Living Trust runs the same risks. Condon's suggestion - make them all successor co-trustees/executors (unless there's a problem with mental disability, financial immaturity, drugs, etc.). Don't let problems with distance dissuade you.Sometimes the children agree that one should be the sole Trustee - usually because that one has more business experience. Condon, however, contends that is not the issue - rather, it is 'Would this agreement eliminate normal human suspicions and conflicts arising when one child has sole power?'Another issue - assume the parents had three children and wanted to leave them equal shares in the apartment building they owned, and wanted to prevent their children from selling the building - preserving it for their future generations. As equal co-owners, each child would have the right to force a sale through court proceedings, even against the wishes of his siblings. A special Trust, however, would preserve the building in the bloodline until the death of the last Greenfield child.On the other hand, if your children have differing economic goals for their inheritances, don't make them co-owners - leave each a separate property and require them to hire a licensed real estate appraiser to calculate the difference in values, then have the child with the higher-valued property even up the difference.Another warning - don't die with your children owing you money. Instead, create a formal Promissory Note for your son (and his wife) to sign, collateralize that loan with a Mortgage or Trust Deed against their home, or forgive the loan and call it a gift. Alternatively, force equalization after death via the use of a real estate appraisal.Another major issue - protecting an inheritance while it's in the hands of your child. Condon estimates one of every five families he's seen has a child with a self-evident need to have the inheritance protected. Mismanagement and squandering, and subsequent divorces/remarriages are significant issues. In your Will or Living Trust, you can include a 'Protection Trust' in which your money and property go to a Trustee of the Protection Trust. That Trustee must carry out any inheritance instructions you provide. Typically these direct him to give your child portions of the inheritance from time to time, and control the inheritance for the rest of your child's life.On the other hand, many parents have a 'Depression-era' perspective - having saved religiously for everything owned. Another alternative to beginning your child's financial education early. A third is to require that Trustee to match every dollar your child earns.Protecting the inheritance from your child's spouse is an important consideration. This could occur by inheritance, by gift (eg. a daughter putting an inheritance in her and her husband's joint names with right of survivorship), or by law (Hawaii declares that when one spouse inherits, the other automatically has rights to a portion). Some suggest a 'Transparent Trust' in which you establish a Living Trust and leave the inheritance to your child 'in Trust;' when your child dies, remaining assets will pass to your grandchildren. But, your child could spend all the Trust assets, amend/revoke the Trust terms, or terminate the Trust.The 'good news' is that the Transparent Trust gives your child the power to say no to his spouse, the 'bad news' is that he or she still may be talked out of total control. Thus, the stronger irrevocable 'Protection Trust.' All the money and property goes to a third-party Trustee who controls them for as long as specified.Author Condon states that 25% of the families he's dealt with have a 'disabled' child - alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling, won't stay on his medication, etc. His recommendation is an 'Irrevocable Protection Trust,' using a corporate Trustee. The downside is that the bank won't hold your disabled child's hand - eg. visiting every day to ensure all his financial needs are met.

I thought I knew about wills, but there were a lot of potential problems I never dreamed of. I have bought 3 copies of this book to give to friends. Very easy to understand and very helpful. Lot of useful information in here. This isn't exactly a "how-to" book. The value is in providing awareness of problems that can come up later, i.e., after you're dead. Things I never would have known to even think about before. I think this is a good book to read prior to even starting the process of making out a will. From what I know, it's worth the money to have a lawyer involved in creating a will - this isn't a do-it-yourself kind of thing, in my opinion. But reading this first will provide background knowledge that can make a big difference. Highly recommended.
