this is a GREAT book. I read it a long time ago, so the details are a little cloudy but I remember it was fantastic and I remember feeling attached to the characters. I didn't want it to end! I do remember waiting for a few days before I finished it because it made me sad. It is one of those books that you won't want to give away but save to read again. I owned this YEARS ago, like 35 years! I was perusing through the books here on Amazon and when I saw it, I just HAD to ad it to my wanted list and I bought it soon after. NO ONE is getting this book! I used to loan my books out and now it seems all the GREAT books I allowed people to "borrow" were as beloved to my friends as well! I never have gotten them back, which is where this book went! I am really happy that I can find any book I want here at Amazon! It seems like anything I need is so easy to find here and easy to purchase, the shipping is free, and I normally get everything SO fast. I can't wait to get into 100 Years of Solitude! GET THIS BOOK!!! You will love it! I have been reading it and laughing out loud. I forgot that it's also funny. You won't be disappointed if you buy this book. UPDATE: As I read this book, I remember how very complex it is. You have to pay attention to the characters but it's worth it. I love it. Can't wait to buy more of his books!

One Hundred Years of Solitude really isn't as difficult or confusing as some reviews make it seem. People make it seem like it's impossible to get through so many repeating names, but even when the characters share a name, almost every single character (until the last generation--and by that point the first characters are long gone so that it wasn't really confusing) has a unique name. How is that confusing? And anyway, it doesn't take too many chapters or a genius to figure out they all share the same names for a reason. Also, I must say, if you don't like the first 50-100 pages, you probably aren't going to like the rest of the book. It stays like that... Plus, the first Jose Arcadio Buendia is one of the more entertaining characters in the book, in my opinion. But, I think Aureliano Segundo and Remedios The Beauty were the highlights in this book. I was cracking up throughout their scenes.Although I feel I missed a lot about what was going on symbolically whilst reading (mostly a lot of the religious stuff), I still found this book to be extremely enjoyable. It's inspiring and surreal, whimsical, funny and sad--and it all causes a person to feel very introspective, because it blends so many aspects of what makes up a person's life. I looked up some of the themes and motifs after reading to make sure I caught everything, and I prefer many of my own interpretations. And I think Gabriel Garcia Marquez meant to write it in a way that was a more personal experience. At the end notes, he mentions in an interview how he wanted to capture the way an abuela tells stories to her grandchildren-- and I got that vibe the whole time. And a lot of times, the surreal in crazy old latin american stories is what makes you remember the life lessons behind the story. And I feel like that's what happened here.But again, I feel like most people I know wouldn't like this book, and I can see where they're coming from. It definitely isn't for everyone. And I must stress that that's not coming from a pretentious place. His writing style will be frustrating to many readers I'd presume, because it's really just incredibly unique. But, if you can get past the style (long paragraphs, little fluctuation in narration, mentioning things that haven't really happened yet, or no main protagonist... etc) and the repetition of names, it really isn't super complicated or anything.It isn't perfect, but It's great. And even though I started this review planning to give it four stars, after writing it--I think it's an important enough, and intricately weaved enough, and a unique enough a piece to warrant a 5-star from this fella.

this is a stunning work, with a translation that is worthy of the author. i was an english teacher and a colleague had dual citizenship with colombia and she read both versions of this work and couldn't decide between the two. i've only read the english translation, but even the translation puts it in the top tier of all the novels i've read. that's good news and bad news maybe. that means that the work is easily available to english-speakers, but that doesn't make it any easier to read as a work of literature. my guess is that it can be read on several levels at once, but i've never talked to anyone about the novel who wasn't a lit major. this work is so different and so interesting, you should try reading it no matter what your school experience with literature has been.

When my son was little, I had a book called Let's Go! with lots of fun and interesting places to bring kids in Connecticut. Written before everyone had easy access to Google maps on a phone (or even had internet access at home, for that matter), the book included directions to the attraction and comments about access. These bits of information were worth the weight in gold! I knew ahead of time whether I'd need to pack food and drinks or if snack bars or other eateries were nearby. I could plan clothing because I knew that part of the facility was outdoors. I didn't waste my time driving there on Tuesday, my day off work, only to discover that the place is closed on Tuesdays. Entrance fees were listed, and although I knew those could change I at least had a ball-park range of the cost to get in the door. Recommendations about appropriate age-range helped on those occasions I was with other people and children.Although this book, Connecticut Curiosities, has lots of really great curiosities and intriguing places to visit, generally it doesn't include those sorts of practical tidbits that can make an outing memorable or a fiasco. Yes, there is contact information included for anything listed that is manned by people or that has a website, but not every place mentioned is developed.It's important to say here, this book is not just a "travel guide" sort of book. Included are loads of fascinating trivia and memorable stories about unusual people. Part of the title is "Quirky Characters", after all. Unfortunately the anecdotes are thin, usually only a few paragraphs. Sometimes they mention people, places or events about which others have published more extensive work, so if your curiosity is piqued by a mention you may still be able to do research and ferret out a more satisfying story.I wish this book had decided to be either a guide to Connecticut day trips to unusual places or ongoing events or a brief history of some of its colorful historical characters and events. I think by trying to combine both aspects into one slim volume, everything ends up leaving you wanting more but having less. I ended up giving this book away.

If you want to explore interesting things in Connecticut, this is the book to start with. My son and I often do interesting things on Saturday mornings. Part of it is just "bonding time", but part of it is that mom works every other Saturday, so those days we have special freedom to do interesting things. And we do. During warm months, an emphasis is on hiking and outdoor activities. During cold months, if we are not sledding, we try more indoor activities.Many of the things that we have done are in this book. I was pleasantly surprised. I bought this as a present for mom so that maybe she can join in more often (she does better if she has a picture in her mind and this book is full of pictures).Explore Connecticut by visiting "everyday" places you might not have noticed. These are the kinds of places that out-of-staters might ask "have you been there" but the residents do not even know they exist -- right next door. Definitely worth taking a look at.

He answers questions from the most mundane, like which astronaut has the longest name, to highly technical questions related to atmospheric drag during reentry. In addition to the answers to 800 questions ranging from the early days of NASA to the joint International Space Station project, there is a section on firsts in space, lots of black and white photos and a extensive index.Bill Pogue was the pilot of the Skylab 4 mission, which was the third and final manned visit to the Skylab orbital workshop. At the time, this mission was the longest flight in the history of manned space exploration and set a record of 34.5-million-miles traveled. The crew successfully completed numerous material science experiments, Earth observations as well as solar observations. After leaving NASA, he provided contract technical support to the Boeing Company, working on the Space Station Freedom and its offspring the International Space Station. He is also the author of the book, "How Do You Go to the Bathroom in Space?"

In my opinion, this book was fun, enjoyable, and interesting to read. Thefirst part of the book has 800 space related trivia questions with theiranswers. Other sections include: Naming a Spacecraft, Lunar Landing Sites,G-Forces, and an index that includes the trivia question subject and pagenumber. There is also a center section that has color photos. The last fewpages includes information about other space related and Apogee Space Seriesbooks to buy. This book can be improved by producing a current updated editionwith color photos where there are black and white ones. Another suggestion maybe to produce a hardcover version. This trivia book is great along with the spacerelated board game Go For Launch!

The book has lots of fun questions and the answers are very informative. The longer answers include a 2nd sidebar of info. Includes the basic questions that most space enthusiasts should know plus more in-depth questions. Some about the shuttle, the early Gemini and Mercury missions, Apollo and also planet-related questions. Worth reading and a good reference book, when you need to know the dimensions of the shuttle payload bay, for example (15 feet by 60 feet).

What a fun read! Lots of items that could be used either at a space party or indeed to educate kids. There are so many cool factoids and many excellent color photos. Bill Pogue should be congratulated for putting this excellent book together. I also like to see Apogee appealing to the armchair astronaut in us all without being too technical.I would recommend this book, especially to any teachers that might consider it.

It's been sad to read "christians" tear down this message, trying to hyper-critique the ways John shares stories from the Bible or how he speaks to men. Men all over the world found freedom to be themselves in their experience and relationship with God, to begin to actually walk with God, hear His voice and know His heart. I know men all over the U.S. who began to rise up to love their wives, find their calling, engage the lives of their kids, and begin to love the life God has given them and live it well! And thousands of families have also experienced so much good because of this.If you're the type that feels it's your god-given duty to scour the texts of books to find all "the errors" and expose "heresy", I'm sure you can (or already have) gleefully torn away at John's message. But, honestly, I ask, "Really? Why not just become an IRS agent instead?" And, I say, "Get a life." Sincerely, I say, go get a life that worth's living! Stop hiding behind your computer or your pulpit or your religious duties or your secret addictions and find the wide open spaces of life!The message of WAH, both in the book and in the retreats Ransomed Heart put on based on this message was an invitation for me to experience God in ways I never thought possible and to experience life in its fullness in ways I never thought possible. And not only was it an invitation, it was permission to finally live my life. Maybe that doesn't make sense to many, but it was a game-changer for me. After returning from a WAH retreat, my wife literally said to me, "What happened? You even look different." My life will never be the same. Nor will the life of my wife and my children.

I am not surprised there was a lot of negative feedback on the topics expressed in this little book. In these times it is no longer valid to use gender to explain why you may like or dislike certain things. This book is not meant only for the jock, or the outdoorsman. It is meant for the heart that yearns to find ways to express a passion that may seem wrong for a Christian man, and that's really it.There are many opinions on how we should behave, or more recently that we do not behave as men have in the past. It is true we are meant to be adventurous and a bit wild but that is a different thing for each man, not a template- the author was simply expressing it as he himself saw it. It is up to you to find your passion, your wild side, and break free of the life you may mistakenly think is correct as a follower of the Way of God. But there are many different paths, as long as we stay on that straight and narrow one, neither turning to the left or the right- being obedient, faithful. I would say if it doesn't trouble your spirit, go for it! The only opinion that matters is Gods, not mans.I myself do many things that aren't considered manly yet also do things that are over the top! For example, I write poetry, rescue ladybugs, read about decorating and color and style, and tear up over emotional things- I am sentimental, and I try to show empathy to others at all times. I also carry a concealed firearm, practice Tang Soo Do and Krav Maga, and regularly work out with weaponry such as knives and sticks- and I am trying to learn Iado, the Way of drawing and cutting with the katana. I love long walks, but I don't watch sports, and can't tell you anything about any team. I don't bunjee dive or shoot down the rapids or any of that, but I see it as valid. Again, if it doesn't become the end in itself it is all up to that old thing we used to call conviction- the Holy Spirit will tell you it isn't something you should do. It isn't nerds vs. jocks, or the cultured, educated man vs the uneducated manual laborer. (I work in a factory, and that is because I chose to work with my hands after spending half my life working in the Mental Health field.) We are all part of the body- and scripture says no particular part is favored above the other. So embrace your inner wild man and push your boundaries a little bit! For some of us it isn't much or very daring, but it is enough to inspire the soul.

If you want to write a book about what you feel to be true, that's one thing, but when you bend, distort and flat out lie about what the Word of God says to back your belief, well then expect to be judged by God's Word.If that's the case this book is heretical at best.It seems like throughout this book the author is trying too hard to make up for some lack of machismo he thinks he needs.I actually watched one of the Wild at Heart Bootcamp sessions where John Eldredge makes fun of Mister Rogers and insinuates Fred Rogers is not a "real" man.So in this book and others authored by Eldredge, he sets out to show what a "real man" he is by climbing mountains, hunting bear, tracking elk, blah, blah, blah.....Like any good poker player knows, you always portray just the opposite of what you are.Read 'em and weep:)

What is the source of authority when it is found in any community? How did authority in the Roman Catholic Church come to be as it is? In Authority in the Church, David Stagaman, S.J., provides answers to these questions. He asserts that authority is not an attribute of a person (for example the local bishop) nor of a thing (for example the Scriptures). It is rather the bond experienced by all members of a community as they interact. Authority in the Church explores relationships between official and charismatic authority, and their legitimation. The study also provides a basis for dissent by showing how official and charismatic exercises of authority are incomplete without it. Chapter one explores how Roman Catholic Church membership has in the last fifty years shifted from an almost total preoccupation with official authority to a recognition of the necessary role charismatic authorities play in the Church. Chapter two criticizes other studies that delineate authority as either a subjective reality or an objective one. It also critiques two modern myths about authority: that authority is opposed to sound reasoning and that it is inimical to freedom and/or spontaneity. Chapter three examines authority as a shared practice; one that welcomes dissent. Chapter four looks at the first millennium of Christianity: New Testament understandings of authority; the ascendance of mono-episcopacy in the post-apostolic era; the Church?s universalist mission after Constantine?s edict of toleration; the emergence of councils and synods as modes of government; and claims for succession to Petrine primacy. Chapter five begins with the turn towards centralization in Rome and a juridical understanding of ecclesial authority in the eleventh century. This is comprehensive study of the history of authority in the Roman Catholic Church. It truly helped me to understand why the Church operates as it does and why changes are so hard to implement and take so very long to affect the universal Church.The need for reform, in the highest levels of the Church's structure, is so evident when one sees how far the Roman Rite has strayed from our earliest days as Church. Yet, it is also equally noted that true change, true reform will take time and must be multifaceted, while being fundamentally accepted by the hierarchy and the people in the pew almost simultaneously - a Herculean task! This makes it imperative for those in authority to explain changes and the reasons for their need thoroughly to the People of God prior to changes actually being promulgated.Thankfully, the Holy Spirit is with us!!!Please note: This is an academic text. There was so much to absorb, it took me longer than usual to read. Well worth the effort!
