Being of Christian faith to say that I am aware a little of Saint Thomas Becket and how he died was a sad and sorrowful thing to hear or read when I was younger. Then to hear one of my most favorite medieval romance authors Ms. Kathryn Le Veque put the whole sordid tale in a romance book is unbelievable! This is a beautiful masterpiece combining both fact and fiction seamlessly. The story is told wonderfully in a composed heartrending breathtaking story of hope, betrayal, redemption, and love all rolled into one. The story comes alive and the characters even the minor ones are amazingly three dimensional plus real. I am amazed at each story that Ms. Le Veque manages to pen leaving me utterly spellbound never knowing the twists/turns she weaves with intricate mastery enthralled me and made me sad for the book to end.Sir Valor “Val” de Nerra known as the itinerant justice of Hampshire is one of King Henry’s II most trusted knights a fair and just man who upholds the law at all times. Val always knows what is right living a near perfect idyllic life with his nagging mother but everything that Val holds dear his beliefs and the very law that makes him who he is will be questioned just from meeting Vesper D’Avignon. Val can’t help but be entranced and attracted to the beautiful lady but Vesper holds a horrible secret of her own too. When Val is tasked with a horrible deed and threatened by the King himself to carry out his orders will Val be able to do it?As I stated before Ms. Le Veque has truly mastered the wonderful development of her characters especially her main male and female protagonist. Val at first seems like a harsh stiff brash man but he is not without a sense of humor in teasing his mother and true devotion to his past friends. I couldn’t help but like and admire him for his fortitude and tenacity in the face of true adversity. Val is aptly named Valor and he signifies everything valorous he really is a great hero to fall for! On the other hand Vesper was brave, bold and beautiful truly Val’s equal in every sense of the word. Vesper isn’t a simpering miss to back away from the fight and was willing to stand with Val no matter the cost which I totally loved. I did wonder if Val ever forgave McCloud though. I still wouldn’t mind hearing about the some of the other minor characters like Mayne, Kenan, William, and Dacian hopefully they will get a story someday. I guess in actuality I really wasn’t ready for the story to be over. I will anxiously be awaiting Ms. Le Veque’s next jaunt into history and love!

As you know Kathryn Le Veque, is a talented storyteller and her novels are always filled with passion and emotions! That’s why I fell in love with Val the hero in her new book VESTIGES OF VALOR, the 1st story in the House of the Nerra series. It's a must to read, if you love medieval adventures with rich characters! Emotionally powerful!Vestiges of Valor, is the story of Sir Valor ''Val'' de Nerra, a powerful knight, one of Henry II's most trusted knight, a man everyone adored! Suddenly, as an Itinerant Justice, dreadful decisions will mark him for ever. Val will need to redeem himself is he wants to move on with his life! A redemption which will not be easy to achieve! Val had always loved Lady Vesper, but because of these terrible events, he will do everything to gain back her trust! Will she forgive him? Is there hope for Val and Vesper? I loved the beautiful chemistry between those two passionate souls. I also liked very much Val’s mother Margaretha, she was charming , funny but also quite bold and feisty! VESTIGES OF VALOR is the tale of Sir Valor "Val" De Nerra, one of King Henry II's most prestigious and powerful knights. Val seemingly has the world at his feet and has just met Lady Vesper d'Avignon, the woman of his dreams, when he's suddenly thrust into an impossible situation. Forced to make a terrible decision that could cost him Lady Vesper's affection, he's determined to win her back when he's then pulled into an assassination plot against the Archbishop of Canterbury. As much as this story is about Val's fall from grace, it's also about his redemption and the love of his friends, family, and the woman he adores. A brave and bold lady who is not willing to give her knight up without a fight...I really enjoyed this story but have to admit that it didn't completely pull me in until just before the halfway point. Before then I wasn't truly feeling the connection between Val and Vesper and I wasn't a huge fan of Vesper's either. Once the assassination plot came to be though I thought the story really picked up its pace and my respect and admiration for Vesper and her loyalty to Val knew no bounds. Val on the other hand was not only an honorable knight who lives up to his lofty name of "Valor" but a man I fell in love with almost instantly. Their romance ended up being very touching too. Some of the things they said to each other was so lovely and beautiful I even caught myself sighing out loud.Overall Ms. Le Veque has once again written an engaging, passionate, and emotional medieval romance that I would most assuredly recommend. I only wish I'd felt as connected to Vesper and the first half of this story as much as I did the second. In the end it was definitely a compelling read though and one I'm so glad that I read. I was also thrilled to see Tevin du Reims again (While Angels Slept) who at this point was an older man in his sixties. I appreciated the Post Script too and the details provided therein about the fate of the villains. As for the story itself, it contained 305 pages & ended at 93% and location 4689 of 5026 on my kindle device, and not a single moment of that was ever boring =)

I can't understand why this book is no longer in print. I bought it soon after I suffered a severe spinal cord injury. This book describes so many ways that someone with a SCI can remain active, from sailboating to downhill skiing, handcycling, flying a glider, traveling, mountain climbing, sex, etc, etc, etc... It also gives the current state of medical research in stem cell therapy. It gives phone numbers and web site addresses to the experts where you can get more information and the book itself is FULL of practical information (for example, what to do if you need to urinate during a long airplane flight). I've mentored other new SCI patients and loaned out my copy of this book and found this to be an indispensible resource. It answers basic questions that aren't covered by rehab therapists.

*** Update 12/28/13 ***Note: My copy of the book is an earlier edition than the fourth edition being sold now. At that time the word "Wheelchair" was not in the title, hence my comments about having SCI but being ambulatory.One reviewer said, "This is a 'must have' book for people with any connection to Spinal Cord Injury (SCI)."Another said, "No joke - if you are living with a spinal cord injury or if you are newly injured, you need to own this book."Well...sort of. The author of the book clearly meant it for wheelchair-bound persons and all the previous reviewers must have assumed anyone with SCI is. If you are, this book is a great resource. If you have SCI but are still able to walk, dress yourself, etc., albeit with difficulty, as I am, you will find it less useful. There is no information on walking aids, exercise equipment, etc. for those with limited ability to walk or use their arms.I would also have liked to have tabs for all the chapters not just a couple.My other gripe...after paying over thirty bucks for this book I am annoyed at all the advertisements thru out the book.The day will probably come when I will need wheels to get around, and will find the book more useful. In the interim, it will spend most of the time on the shelf.

Mr. Donoghue starts out with an interesting idea - an ancient, highly advanced race has left clues to their existence in stones imbued with mysterious properties. Unfortunately, he proceeds to write the wrong story! Following Uncle Devlin as he races around the world, uncovering clues to find the stones would have been a fun ride. Listening to Anlon, Pebbles and Jennifer discuss the stones over wine and margaritas.....boring.There is FAR too much talking and not enough doing. All the action comes to characters in the form of various shady bad guys. Anlon and his friends are completely reactive instead of proactive. The dialog is clunky and the characters shallow. Jennifer, the detective who keeps forgetting basic detective procedure, Pebbles with her dark secret (which actually isn't very dark) and Anlon, the genius inventor who seems to have trouble putting two and two together. Any hint of tension between Jennifer and Pebbles is quickly erased and we know where the relationship between Anlon and Pebbles is going from about chapter 5. The author relies on the characters inexplicably deciding to "wait until the morning" to investigate or not following up on interesting facts they uncover in order to generate tension. It just doesn't work.Having said all that, I do think the author has potential if he can find himself a good editor. I give him credit for a good idea but he really needed help tightening the story and working the dialog. I won't be reading the rest of the series but I might check back with Mr. Donoghue after another few books to see how (and if) his style has developed.

This is the first time in quite a while that I've really enjoyed a pure-fiction book. It is very much in the Dan Brown genre of imaginative fiction. Too many of the offerings lately have been "post-apocalyptic": bleak, useless, depressing stuff. Here we have a great trip through our modern world, brightened by the discovery that there was an advanced civilisation many thousands of years before ours.The author uses *Indiana Jones* as an example of the storytelling style, and to a degree, that's true. Once the stage is set, the very good plotting draws you in for page-turning fun and escape. To be literal about it, *Indiana Jones* took us to exotic locations, and this book does not; but where it does take us is to a place where we can vacation from the real world for a while.The characters are believable, and grow and change as the story unfolds, something I always appreciate. At each of their cores, they are human, and not some set of super-beings. They each have their strong and weak points, which both advance and hinder their progress through the plot, which wends and weaves the story in both their advances and setbacks.Well done.I have found one considerable downside, however: This otherwise excellent book suffers greatly from a serious lack of good proofreading. Several giant blunders in punctuation are often and repeatedly committed, throwing one off the otherwise terrific rhythm of its pacing and plotting. They are unfortunately rampant throughout the book. Some examples: "worshiper of the town's Catholic church", "Thank you for sharing Anabel", and many others.I give this book five stars for its imagination, storyline, pacing, and plotting. But I must subtract one star for the atrocious punctuation. I work as a professional Technical Writer and proofing is an integral part of the job. I wish I could offer my services to folks like this, as it would improve the quality of the work tremendously.Don't let this stop you from buying the book; it is a great read.

After being "stuck" on TEOTWAWKI, TSHTF, Financial Armageddon, Plague and EMP, for the past two or three years they are all beginning to sound alike. This book was and honest to goodness Mystery, with more twists and turns than a pretzel, lots of interesting characters that the authorreally brings home for you to meet. The characters are very well developed even one who is already dead at the start! The story begins at Tahoe where I was born and raised (so maybe I'm a little biased) and quickly moves on to Stockbridge, MA of which I am also intimately acquainted obviously, so is the author because the settings and descriptions are so accurate which oft times they are not. This book is fun and has everything , great characters, hateful villains, a bit of sci-fi in the archeology, love, jealousy, hate and greed. Mr. Donoghue deftly weaves his story to a thrilling conclusion. Just when I thought I wouldn't read about my new found friends again I find at the end that we will meet again in April.I'm not much on sequels but in this case I've already pre-ordered. Many thanks to the author, you made my two day bout with a nasty flu much easier to get through.

Donoghue is clearly ill-informed about the craft of fiction writing. He acknowledges three persons who "edited" his manuscript, but none of them did a creditable job. This novel is very difficult to read: inappropriate punctuation gets in the way (e.g.,Interior monologue enclosed in quotes.); way to much time spent on vaguely related back story; frequent unreasoning shifts of point of view, often in the midst of a scene. Unneeded shifts between past and past perfect tense create confusion for the reader.All of that said, Donoghue's plot is fascinating and, if better crafted, this novel could have been a good one.

Excellent rune book. This is the 3rd or 4th different rune book I've gotten over the 25 years or so I've been reading runes. My last name is a rune and my ancestry is Nordic/Germanic so this is a passion of mine. I even have the whole runic alphabet plus a few bind runes tattooed into a design on my back. I got to see authentic ancient rune carvings in Sweden in 2010. This Nordic Runes book is an excellent mix of history and useful info for throwing readings. The author really knows his stuff, so it's not dumbed down, and it's a great choice for the experienced rune reader. Yet it's not too complex and confusing for someone just starting out. I paid full price for this. I was not given a product discount for an honest, unbiased review, or compensated in any way.

When you find an author that discusses esoteric topics with clarity, simplicity, and above all, experience and knowledge, you know you have found a good author. When that same author offers academic references and clearly stated personal opinions, you know you have found a great author. Mountfort falls under the second category.I really appreciate Mountfort’s efforts to include a variety of different sources when discussing the Runes. I definitely got the feel that he is well researched and practiced and not just regurgitating what others have said.I like his writing style and honesty. Rather than paint some mystic associations he is down to earth and practical. His main intention is to introduce the divinational aspects rather than the magical and developmental ones. Though, he does offer a little bit on these as well.The authors correspondence section of the Runes gives us some traditional names, sounds, imagery, and definitions, as well as, the traditional poems associated with each Rune, their meanings, keywords, and myths/legends related with them. The myths and legends part I really liked. This is by far the best introductory book on the Runes I have come across.This is the fifth book on my suggested Rune Reading List:1. This guide book is an invaluable asset if you are going to start reading runes. It helps with a guide to how this divination came about, offers descriptions of what each rune means and even talks about how to make your own runes.There is so much information in this book and it is well written that anyone who is new to runes could easily get away with only having this book and not needing any other guide.

If you are new to Runes. Get this first before you get into Freya Aswinn or Edred Thorrson. It's awesome. Always keep it around. Honestly You won't be disappointed. Well written. Easy to understand yet gives you a great course in the runes. Also has a lot of historical information. For the reader of runes who isn't completely uneducated in runes and knows some. It's not a dumbed down version it's a concise well spoken book. +++++

A great take on the Nordic Runes. I have been runecasting since I was about 7, and this surely added much knowledge to my practice of using runes for divination and magic, and that really says something. I use this as a reference whenever I need it, and it is spot on for divination meanings, it also goes into making runes and using runes for magical purposes. I really find this to be a useful book of reference

I love this book. I like the way that it is organized, it's easy to use and I love the explanations it give for the runes. Includes lots of cool poems for each rune. I would highly recommend this to anyone. Two of my friends have since bought their own copy and are also very happy with it.

Another good divination handbook from Paul Rhys Montfort. He is a fund of good information, and even though I have been using runes for years, I have found some really good material. His format is very easy to use for reference material.

Maybe I’m just a sissy with runes.... my rating might be because runes are just not for me. The meanings behind each were just way too “doom and gloom” and rarely positive or even neutral so I didn’t enjoy working with this book.
