This is a lovely little tale about a caring, dog-loving girl and an adorable puppy in desperate need of a friend. Short and easy to read, with some cute illustrations, it would be perfect for young animal lovers.Laura is friendly and responsible and longs for the company of a dog to take on walks. So when a party of teenagers comes to stay at the holiday cottage next to Laura’s house, she is delighted to find that they have a puppy – and that the owner would like her to look after it. Poor little Henry isn’t quite so pleased. He’s small and nervous and hates loud noises. But when Laura is around he feels safe.Henry is incredibly sweet and I really felt for the poor thing in this book, which made it doubly good when Laura was there to look after him. The book does a good job of showing how to be a responsible dog owner (and how not to be) without being too stern.It’s a sweet story in true Holly Webb style, telling both Laura’s and Henry’s side of things. Young dog lovers should thoroughly enjoy it – and a few adults too.(I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.)

i love these books I've red all of them 5 or 6 times and im not making that up im nine years old and i love these books i just finished the tail of emily windsnap and the sirens secret for the 6th time literary im not lying i wish i could go back in time and read them for the first time again and experience the magic for the first time over and over again you should definitely buy all of these book because you will love them as much as i do!!

My daughter loved this book we got a whole set! She needs to read at least 20 mins a day but she spends more time reading this and less time on electronics now. She would tell me what she read so far over breakfast before she goes to school.

I bought the entire set of the Emily Windsnap books for my 10 year old niece as a birthday gift. She loves mermaids and loved the books.

I am going to tell you about the setting of The Tail of Emily Windsnap. The setting took place on a ship called King of the Sea and I think that is an interesting name for a ship. Most of the setting is either on the ship or in the ocean and the author described the setting very well. I could almost imagine myself in the setting of this story. The setting of The Tail of Emily Windsnap is very creative and amazing. I can tell you a lot about the plot of this story. A girl named Emily finds out she is half mermaid at the beginning of the story when she swims for the first time and I think that it would be awesome to find out you were half mermaid. I found it very interesting when Emily met a mermaid named Shannon and learned about her dad at mermaid school. She goes through a great and crazy adventure to find her dad who is a mermaid also. I loved the plot of The Tail of Emily Windsnap. I am going to tell you the conflict and resolution of The Tail of Emily Windsnap. I thought it was surprising when Emily found out her dad was a mermaid, and was in prison and that was a problem. She is half mermaid and mermaid prison is very far away, so she would have to swim underwater, which I think would be crazy because she would not be able to swim that long and far. So Emily, her mom, and Mr. Beeston went into the ocean on a ship, so Emily could jump out of the ship when they were far enough, and go through a difficult adventure to save her dad. Emily went through a crazy adventure just to save her dad.

This was a book I read in my class for book clubs with my best friends,my teacher,and some friends who were boys. In this book,there is a girl,Emily,a mermaid,who is a hero in her own way. Most people are used to reading about a man perseptionist,but no,this time it was a woman! My point is that anyone can read this book and enjoy it. You do not have to be a girl to read about girls,and you do not have to be a boy to read about boys! I have a friend,Ryan,who read "The Tail Of Emily Windsnap" with me,and who liked it so much he bought the entire series! I am not saying you have to like this book( You most likely will though,), I am saying this book is for all gender,all people,to read. It is ok if you do not like it,but if you do not like it based on the gender of the main character,that us wrong and you need to think about that. This book had morals which made me think,Who am I? Am I truly being myself? Can I be more? This book had friendships,morals,life lessons,and meaning. My classmates and I have all been split up into different book clubs,and we are all in a book club with some other classmates,and we are doing mini dioramas based on this book. We had 5 - 6 boys in our group,and we had 5 girls. All the boys are working just as hard and focusing just as much on this diorama as the girls,even though the book had a female perseptionist! If you are still in Elementrary,Middle,or High School,then try and tell your teachers and friends about this book,and maybe you guys can do book clubs on the series. If you are reading this review at home,or maybe you're a parent,wanting to buy a book for your son or daughter,then tell all your friends so that they can tell more people so that everyone can read "The Tail Of Emily Windsnap". My 11-year-old daughter loved this book and read it in 1 day! Now we are waiting for the first set, it is coming next week and she keeps asking me everyday when it will get here. loved the first book.

I purchased this as a Christmas present for 8 year old and paired it with a mermaid tail blanket. Reading the synopsis, it seems like an appropriate, yet challenging and interesting read for her. I like that it's part of a series so if she enjoys it, there are more!

My grand daughter REALLY wanted this for Christmas, but I thought it would be too late to expect getting it through Amazon. Surprise ! got the book this morning (7AM). The cover art work on the book is adorable. The sparkles on the mermaid would make any girl want to read this book.Lila (grandgirl) loves to swim... and she will love this story. She even has a blanket in the shape of a mermaid tail.

A Persian prince, Calaf, smitten after one look at the young woman, determines to try his luck. Though he answers her riddles correctly, she still refuses to marry him. Because he adores her, he offers her a way out. If she can guess his name, he will leave Peking. This story was introduced by the Venetian playwright Carlo Gozzi (1720-1806), whose dramatized fairy tales were enormously popular during his lifetime. His version, said to be drawn from a tale he found in The Arabian Nights, widely impressed European romantics. Several composers have based operas on the story, notably Giacomo Puccini. Mayer's retelling follows the general outlines of his version. She softens Puccini's tragic libretto by leaving out his most notable addition to the tale: the cruel death of Calaf's loyal slave girl. A source note outlines the story's history. The illustrations, suffused with 1920s decadence, are also informed by Puccini's conception. Still tableaux, featuring many closeups of Turandot as a vamp draped in pearls and cuddling a tiger, stage the story on an icebound landscape. Since the text is not faithful to Puccini's problematic libretto, it will not be much help to those wishing to introduce his opera. Readers are left with a sentimental, improbable love story, slickly illustrated, that reflects the popular image of China at the turn of the century?a distant, exotic place populated by barbarous people.?Margaret A. Marianna Mayer tells a tale from the Perians 1001 Knights tales. Turandot is a beautiful but cold hearted Chinese princess who never wants to marry. She convinces her father to let her test every suitor with 3 riddles. If the suitor cannot answer, he forfeits his head. The citizens of the village become hardened and bitter living under the shadows of death year after year. Finally there arrives a suitor who answers the riddles and wins Turandot's heart along the way. They marry and the city blossoms again as a result of their mutual love.Not for the very young---too grusome. I have a 13 year old who found it okay....with a couple of "eewwwws"The artwork by Winslow Pels is regally oriental with a full reverse page illustration at every turn of the page. The tones are dark and reflect the somberness of the story. Adults may know this work as the basis for a Puccini opera.

The illustrations. That is why I picked this up at the library one day. They are elegant and enchanting.The story from the famous Puccini opera is beautifully retold.

Definitely better for older readers, say 4th/5th grade. However, I used it in my 2nd grade music class to teach them more about opera. Each character was an instrument, and the students were assigned characters. They really got into it! The adaptation is great--good vocabulary usage--and the pictures are well done.

As always the art work is beautiful. The story is a little bland but it has its time and place in the world. I am sure it will come in handy at the right time on my child's life.

"Turandot" is an interesting opera in millions have heard an aria from it, "Nessun Dorma" (a.k.a. Lucianno Pavarotti's encore piece of choice), than have ever seen the opera performed. As for what the story of "Turandot" is about, I know I have heard it from time to time, but all I really ever remember is that it is the opera that is rarely performed but has the aria that Pavarotti loves to do in concert. Fortunately, Marianna Mayer and illustrator Winslow Pels have rectified that deficiency in my knowledge of opera by adapting Puccini's opera into this oversized volume.It turns out that the princess Turandot is not only the most beautiful maiden in Peking but the most coldhearted. The popular theory is that the Moon Goddess put a spell on Turdanot that has frozen her heart. When Turdandot's father insists that she marry, she agrees but on one condition: any suitor must answer three riddles. Failure to do so (you know what is coming) means the suitor will lose his life. Of course, this does not stop a series of young men from risking everything for the change to win the hand of the princess. But then a young prince named Calaf presents himself as a suitor and Turandot asks him the three riddles.I did not really like not getting to hear the riddles until Turandot asks them of Calaf, because I wanted to mull them over and see if I could have kept the princess from having her executioner lop my head off, and that is rather hard to do when the answer is in the next paragraph and appears in italics, fairly leaping off the page at you. However, since Calaf is the one suitor who gets mentioned by name you know he is going to get them right, but that only sets up the really great little twist in the tale as Calaf refuses to marry the princess against her will and asks her a riddle that she must solved to be released from her obligation to marry the him.This telling of "Turandot" has some subtle elements that might not appeal to all readers, but those who like stories with riddles will find this one quite interesting. It turns that the story of Turandot is probably the best-known and oldest of those where a proud princess tests her suitors with riddles, being traced back to the original "Thousand and One Nights." You can also find a variation of the tale by the Brothers Grimm called "The Sea-Hare." The Author's Note in the back of the book also points out that there were lots of other operas written based on the story before Puccini's, which was actually finished after his death in 1924 by Franco Alfano. The illustrations by Pels are done in oil and oil pencil soluble.

This book caught my eye due to the cover illustration. I flipped through only 3 pages before I headed to the check-out counter. (bought in a book store today - online looking for more of Winslow Pels illustration/work). The story is fine, but the illustrations are worth framing - I've never seen such beautiful, sophisticated and graceful illustration in a "child's" book - Please say Winslow sells her artwork elsewhere!

this book caught my eye first due to its gorgeous illustrations. winslow pels depictions of the beautiful yet cruel turnadot and the brave prince are lovely. of course, there is also the dramatic and moving story, which while in a version easy for children to grasp, still communicates the emotions and feelings of the characters. i bought a copy for myself and am now buying one for a friend's baby.

Gorgeous artwork, nice telling of story in line with the opera, but without Liu, a character Puccini added. The story as written here makes more sense. Would be a nice intro to the opera, especially for kids. Also could work just as a coffee table art book.

He completed his pre-doctoral internship at Indiana University School of Medicine Psychology Training Consortium. He is the author of Clinical Psychology: Science, Practice, and Culture (3rd Edition, SAGE, 2013) and Psychological Assessment and Report Writing (with Karen Goldfinger; SAGE, 2010). He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Psychology, Ethics & Behavior, and the Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy. He served two terms as president of Psychotherapy Saint Louis and is a member of the American Psychological Association.

Information comes off fairly biased in comparison to other textbooks (you can tell the author prefers humanistic and cognitive theories and dislikes behaviorism (and psychoanalysis, but most agree that's a bunch of BS at this point anyway)), minimizes key players in psychology's history, and it also presents information in a way that comes across as *very* patronizing ("If you look in a mirror, you understand reflection" REALLY?). This was used as a textbook for a 400 level clinical course suggested for CADCII certification, and I found it useless (though that's mostly on the professor for choosing this book).

Easy to read and organized well. I always wonder how current textbooks are and if they provide information that accurately represents scientific consensus. This one seems to get most information correct and seems fairly objective when comparing psychological sub-disciplines.

id give it 5 but no cd as listed. this edition is almost the same as the current one. I still got a great bargain compared to the newest edition. this is written for college level intro to clinical psych. needed a copyy to aid me in my current clinical Psych, class with kaplan online. amazon is now aware of this issue as they sent me a second copy with both parties hoping to see the cd. A great customer service and a refund for this problem. if they do find a cd for it those who are want to add comment after this mentioning any updates will be great

Text is suited for a high school or community college class. I purchased it as a somewhat updated version of my very old clinical psychology text. It is not suitable for a 4-year college/university survey course as it lacks much in the way of detail, only providing a broad overview of the covered topics.

This book is easy to read and understand. I use it for my Clinical Psychology class and it is very helpful.

This is my book to finish my doctoral program. It's great to review and covers good points from ethics to multiculturalism. The book is in excellent condition and arrived on time with out delay.

I like this textbook is easy to read. It has 19 chapters, but it's smaller (size-wise) than most text books. It's straight forward and has pretty good, up to date information in it.

I bought this textbook for a class, and it arrived quickly and was a good price. I am actually somewhat surprised at the material in the textbook. A lot of it focuses on the practice itself, which I think is an interesting take, as every other psychology textbook I have read focuses primarily on the "big names" in research.
